World Cup

I stand against the redneckification of the country.
All things cowboy stay in texas, and build a wall around it.
Apparently it's not written about Texas but about Maryland, but.. it's still "official" for Virginia

Today, the track is an enduring cultural staple, recognized as one of the official state anthems of West Virginia and a popular singalong at major sporting events across the United States.

USA! USA! USA!

@budman im sorry but I don’t understand Americans complaints about soccer being a low scoring game. Baseball and hockey are low scoring. We could make it like football…USA won tonight’s game 14-0.

Bullshit red card, they're both moving together towards the ball, I'm not sure what Balogun is supposed to do, break his own ankle mid-stride? Disappear?
Give the yellow for a clumsy challenge and move on. This VAR shit is getting dumb. It was awesome for offsides that the linesman missed, or gave when it wasn't, but the re-refereeing every moment in slow motion is anti-sporting. Could've carded 7 Bosnian dudes for shirt pulls, waist holds, etc at that rate.

Anyway, the better team won and now we figure out how to beat Belgium without probably our best player.

I think it would have been 4 nothing but all good.
Means nothing to me in the long run because…
I do not participate as you true fans do.

It is like a soccer fan saying MotoGP should start like a motocross race. Everyone line up on the same line. So yeah. I am soccer dorky. :laughing

Good thing about soccer are the lack of commercial breaks. I love NFL football, but I watch the games on time delay now to skip all the commercials and time outs.

30 second skip button is great when watching a recorded NFL game. I can get that 3 hour broadcast down to about 45mins.
60min timed game that takes 3 hours to broadcast with an average of 12mins of action is pretty insane. But you know...money.

I love watching the highlights videos through YoutubeTV - for baseball and football, especially. Shows the 'key plays' which is basically the action. Can catch up on all the good stuff in a game in less than 15 minutes.

Comparing hockey to soccer because the average final score of hockey is not a large number is like comparing a cross-country flight in economy class on a jumbo jet to flying in a fighter jet because they are both flying.

12 people with sticks, blades and permission to absolutely smash each other to death, in a 200ft x 85 ft ice cage, where bare knuckle fistfights are allowed, and they are basically in a full sprint for the entirety of a 1-2 minute shift before changing out from exhaustion, with an average of 20 to 30 shots on goal per team in a game, throwing their bodies in front of 100 mph slap shots, sometimes getting them in the face, losing teeth, breakings bones and keeping on playing like nothing happened

Yeah, just like soccer

Most people who don't like hockey just can't follow the puck when watching and don't know what is going on because it all moves too fast.
Not a bad problem for a sport to have

Doesn't look good for England against Mexico at altitude.

Opponents Mexico have played all of their matches so far on home soil, and the squad is clearly used to coping with the conditions - they have played 14 games at the Azteca so far in the 2020s, scoring 23 goals and conceding only four.

Their competitive record at the Azteca is 70 wins from 89 games, with 17 draws and only two defeats. They are also unbeaten in 10 World Cup games there.

watched a bit of the recent Mexico match, and my non-expert opinion was that they are on another level, compared to Morocco and the USA, anyway. idk.

we had fun watching the USA win yesterday, and there were lots of people to explain the rules to me. :laughing

even had one BARFer from this thread join us, which was fun:

I’m confident that we didn’t party like the Africans or the Colombians, but we did bbq hot links, and were otherwise very happy with the win … :toothless

go USA! :flag

I love hockey, had a cousin that won a national championship and was recruited to play for the top colleges in the US. I can follow it just fine.

The comparison was based strictly on score. All the other stuff mentioned is meaningless in this context.

It is meaningful if someone is saying low # of goals scored = boring, no action to watch.

one sport it's mostly true, one it is not

< Beer league hockey player, and only pro big 4 sport watched....

Uggg, the discussion was about scoring, if you want to move the goalposts have fun talking to yourself.
