World Cup

Love From SAN FRANCISCO šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ¤”šŸ˜¢

I am not a fan of soccer and have not really payed attention to the World Cup but...

Yesterday my wife and I were running errands and she suggested that we stop for lunch at the local Argentina Empanada place so we did. They had the Argentina vs Austria game on a big TV - in Spanish - and we got there just before the first goal. I think we were probably the only ones in there who didn't speak Spanish as our primary language. Several people had #10 Messi shirts on.

In any case, it was kind of fun being among true fans of the team playing in that game, and all of the reactions to the game. When Messi scored the second goal, the owner (who I didn't know was the owner at the time), ran around high fiving everybody in the place.

I probably won't watch another game, but I might also check when the next Argentina game is so I can go back there and cheer for them.

The fawning by the 'British announcers about how great Messi is was a bit nauseating.

The went on and on and on and then he missed a penalty kick and they still went on and on and on.

Give it a rest.

Arguably Messi is the GOAT. He was on the verge of breaking the WC goal record and did so shortly after the pk miss. How much time is spent on LeBron or Wemby during a basketball game broadcast?

isn't calling it "USMNT" as if it's s MINT, minty candy or who knows what abbreviation, just debasing the team? Devaluing it? Stripping of meaning and context?

geese: just how long does it take to type the Men's Team . :x

USMNT

Agree.

Why are other teams referred to by their country and not ā€˜murica? If its because the US also has a women’s team, well, that’s a dumb argument because many countries have men’s and women’s teams.

Do other countries refer to the American team as USMNT?

I grew up hearing about Pele, and he was absolutely worthy of high praise.

But, Messi has gotten himself into the conversation of who is the greatest.

I grew up hearing about Pele too but Messi has doubled him in WC goals and IMO is the better player. In NFL terms it’s Montana vs Brady.

Yes.

That's just what the teams get referred as, USMNT and USWNT.

Pele led Brazil to its first WC, 1958, when he was 17.

His nutrition, training, equipment, etc. was rudimentary compared to what Messi has received in his career.

He has tripled Messi in WC Trophies and is the only player to win three WCs.

The yellow and red cards were introduced AFTER the 1966 WC.

Furthermore, the WC only had 16 teams until 1978

This year has 48 - watered down.

I fail to see how having 48 teams, which equals way way more games for all teams involved, is watered down. Pele was ahead of his time but you can’t believe that the level of competition Brazil faced in the 1950s and 60s is close to France, Spain, Germany, Morocco today.

Like I said Montana vs Brady.

Are teams ā€œrankedā€, say, 36-48, as good as teams ā€œrankedā€, say, 5-16?

2/3’s of Morocco players weren’t even born in Morocco. Conscripts.

What if Montana won 7 SBs and Brady only 3? Montana would the GOAT regardless of number kf TDs thrown. Same thing.

Look at these two jerseys. Brazil 1974. Argentina 2026.

All three of the WC stars on the Brazil jersey won by Pele.

Argentina jersey: One star won by Messi. One star won by the great Maradona - who was only able to win one WC as great as he was.

The teams ranked 5-16 aren’t as good as the top four teams, what’s your point. By your logic no one outside of the top 4 of any sport should be involved in the championship tournament. That’s just flat out dumb.

Players play for countries they weren’t born in all the time. Again, what’s your point.
