World Health Organization's latest report finds that 35.6% of all women, regardless of country, will be attacked in the course of their lives. Most of it, turns out, is done by their boyfriends/husbands.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/jun/20/one-in-three-women-suffers-violence

Highest rates are in Africa: 45.6% of women get attacked. Lowest in Europe: 27.2%. The Americas come in the middle, at 36.1%

Oy. It's all too damn many.

What do you think is the worst part of that stat?

I think the worse part is of the 36.1% you can't identify 50% of them.

Meaning, if I was in a group of 100 women, on average 36 of them will have been attacked. Do you think you could identify at least 18 of them?

I don't. So I wouldn't know who needs help, and which douche bags need their asses kicked. And of the 36, how many stay with the dude to become repeat victims?

Then, you have the other half, those that were attacked and righted the situation and left the dude and have moved on for a better life. Good for them.

How did they come up with those figures? What about all the women who are attacked on a regular basis and suffer in silence? What about all the unreported rapes and assaults? I think it's a lot higher than that.

I'd be curious what the comparable numbers for men are. Probably much higher.

an interesting point. the number of men I know who haven't been in a fight is very small
There's a big difference between getting in a 2 party fight and getting sucker punched out of the blue. I've been in both scenarios.

Does a (non-consensual) slap qualify as violence? If so, I'd be curious as to which direction (male on female or female on male) is more common.

I'd like to know more about how they define violently attacked.

I would guess that men are more likely to have physical violence perpetrated upon them.

My brother in law once smacked his sister because he had a headache and she was "being too loud." a great big stinging smack. I heard all of this from my room. I went to check on her and she was in tears. I went back in my room, found a packet of pain reliever and threw it at his head. I was so pissed at him that I started screaming at him, telling him to take a fucking aspirin next time.

My sisters in law loved me.

Sometimes, my brothers in law could be right dicks to their sisters. My other sister in law left her husband who'd been hitting her after enduring years of abuse. The head scarves and modest clothing made it easy to conceal any marks.

Strangely, the brothers wanted to kill her ex husband even though I'd seen them hit their sisters. It was like, I'll treat them as I like but how dare you mess with my sister like that."

I think the guys raise a valid point, the world isn't easy for them either. My one hesitation to directly compare the situations would be that in some places, women are more likely to be financially dependent on their attackers, for example because they're prohibited from working.

Sorry if I rambled - I'm typing on my phone!

You can look at their Excel data (including their definition of "attacked" which is fairly broad) here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AonYZs4MzlZbdDYzWDlKd2JfVXozY1JOMHQ5YkhDTXc#gid=5

They report a 42% injury rate from the attacks, and one of the figures that surprised even the researchers: 38% of homicides of women worldwide are committed by their husbands or boyfriends. Fucking A.

Ouch :( thats a fucked up statistic.

Many men in the world stil view their wives as their property

There are a lot of SCREWED up Men out there.

I have a friend, who is from Kenya. She says; "I like you because you are gentle".

While that is a nice thing to hear- it makes me wonder what she has seen / lived through. It is VERY sad.

Humans are incredibly emotional animals. Most people are slaves to their own emotions. Yet for some reason very few vultures ever attempt to develop and subdue their emotional response

This post makes me want to cry............... and go hug a puppy.

Then cry some more.

This kind of stuff is why I teach self-defense to women. What I can't teach is the confidence to use it--that has to come from within.

Nemo, I'm strapped but I still wanna take an ass kicking class. Let me know when you are back in commission and able to teach me.
