AHA!!!

So would you agree it's not about whether the pregnancy should be terminated because a quality of life issue, but that it's about (as Andy said) the collision of hopes with reality? I'll be the first to say, finding out that your kid will probably have to be in diapers until 8, and have to have their shoes tied for them until 17 is probably a serious cramp in a parent's style. :|

Is there a problem with that?

No offense dude, but why is it that YOU get to decide what is a valid argument and what is not.

I'd abort that little Matt Damon kid in a flash. There are far too many people in this world, one less fucked up person is one less person taking my resources.

And before you get all up in my face about how many people YOU suffer to live, let me say that I'd also systematically gack all career criminals, permanent mental patients, and hopeless bums. There are too many people.

This is the only argument in the thread that's any good. (and it's pretty good) The rest of it it a bunch of hogwash. A: Half the people I meet every day are fuckin' morons, and I suffer them to live. Second, there are, again, scads of people who are nothing but a drain on society (how the fuck do you define that, anyway?) and again, I suffer them to live. Why? Because they deserve a crack at life, no matter how lame it will eventually come up to have been. How 'bout this bunch of people who claim to be so open-minded actually think about this one. Have you ever met a down's kid before? My high school was right next to the special ed department of our school district, and let me tell you, the sheer joy that some of these 13-15 year-olds displayed as a result of getting their hands on a box of crayons probably beats out even that of a "normal" 15 year-old getting their hands on another 15 year-old, and by the time they're 25-30, most of them can live independently enough to move out of their family's home. (Which is more than can be said for many kids these days) Just because you've got an IQ of about room-temperature doesn't mean you can't ever be happy (name me one fucking person who's happy ALL, most, or even half the time, and I'll show you a toddler), or bring happiness to others.

When you show me someone who needs serious, ongoing, substantial outside physical help to maintain normal bodily functions, THEN you can start talking to me about pregnancy termination. But if all you can point to is IQ, then all I can do is send you here.

Seriously. Most people who DO breed probably shouldn't. :|

And the first ones I'd gack? Those that use the term "I suffer them to live". Criminy, stick that nose a little further up in the air, you may find some people as high and mighty as you if you keeping looking up.

I am unable to conceive so I don't know what I would do but I did work with a woman faced with this exact choice. She aborted. She grew up an only child and had just dealt with her mothers passing by herself. The couple already had a little girl so they were ecstatic when she got pregnant with her second baby. Unfortunately there were some odd test results and the amnio showed the baby had downs and spina bifida. Her OBGyN told her up front that a lot of families don't survive dealing with such a child and they break apart. The first child gets little attention due to the level of care needed for the new baby. They eventually had a beautiful baby boy a few years after that and the family is doing very well. I've always thought I would do the same given their situation but honestly I'm glad I won't have to face this decision. I have much love and respect for her for choosing what she thought best for her family and I'm sure she was right.

If you truly believe there are too many people in the world, you can always start with yourself. Most people only believe there are too many OTHER people in the world. But that is also a fallacy. Just do a search for overpopulation myth.

Two things I want to comment on about this thread:

1. Stephen Hawking wasn't born disabled. He was quite an athlete in his youth. He was diagnosed with ALS in his twenties, although this diagnosis might not be correct. His case is unusual since he's lived with it for so long, and his paralysis is so severe.

2. I worked with adults (age range about 30-60) with Down syndrome. IMO it is superficial to just think these people are just really nice and really happy. They are like any other people once you get to know them. They have fears, frustrations, sadness, lust, joy as much as anyone else. They are equally as self-aware as anyone else. They can be a pain in the ass as much as anyone else. They can hold a job, they can have sex, they can pay taxes. They are not so different from a "normal" person it seems many of you think.

That said, if I was the owner of a womb with a Down syndrome baby inside, I would abort. But I am male, so it's not up to me.

So you are telling me that I should commit suicide?

My point being that we as a society, are paying for all of these people to liver off of us. Down's syndrome aside, my biggest gripe is these death penalty/ lifers that are a drain to society, have nothing to contribute except pain and misery and serve no purpose. What's the point? Humanity? Gack em.

Yes.

No. You see, I am an active contributor to our society. A positive benefit so to say. My point is that we should start with those that are not.

Or did you have some morality opinion that makes mine invalid?

Nope. I just like invalidating everything you say about being productive by forcing you to spend time posting on BARF instead of doing your job, or something else more useful than arguing on teh intarwebz. :laughing

You know what dude, this is a new low on this forum. You actually are telling someone to commit suicide.

I'd tell you what I really think of you and what you just typed but I would undoubtedly get banned for it.

But let me say this, you act as if you are this deep thinking, moral high-ground type of guy. Then you tell me to kill myself because of my opinion? Dude, that is about the most fucked up thing I've seen in a long time.

Check yourself buddy, because someone at some point is going to call you on your bullshit.

Case in point. Here you are wasting time on BARF talking about how you are making me waste time on BARF because of how you are manipulating me? Come on dude, you're not that good. Or is it me that's making you waste your time on BARF?:rolleyes

You are consistently the most arrogant poster on here. At least you can pat yourself on the back over that one.

I wonder how imperfect the science is. I have a friend whose second child was retarded (not downs though). When she got pregnant a third time, the doctors did the pre-screening, amniocentesis, and all that, told her there was virtual certainty the child had downs. She didn't. Turned out totally normal.

For the record, I have a friend that has a kid with Down's (adult kid). She is about the sweetest person I have ever met.

Just do a search for overpopulation myth.

Pretty interesting results, Steve. I've often scratched my head while flying at the vast unpopulated land mass in between cities. It's both a surprise and not that we could allocate 1,000 square feet to each person in the world on a land mass the size of Texas.

Still, the world's population has a disproportionate impact on resources. It's not necessarily a case for reducing population, but we do still have limited fresh water and power. We're polluting the planet and causing ecological change. While I don't buy global warming just yet, it's disturbing to climb a high peak in the wintertime and look out over the snowy vastness, covered by brown haze.

All, in all, I think there's a good case to be made for being smarter about how we use resources, but the data you alluded to is eye opening.

In case your brain stopped working (we'll assume for the sake of argument it didn't long ago), you asked if RATTERS was saying you should commit suicide, and all I said in *MY* post was that you guessed right. I then added a little anecdote just to wind you up even more. You're so easy to manipulate.
