However, the plane used on this flight had small overhead bins, which couldn't fit my helmet. It also did not fit underneath the chair in front of me, so I held it in my lap. At the last minute, one of the flight attendants decided this was not allowed and insisted the helmet be put in the luggage hold. I told her I'd rather wear it during the flight than just put it unguarded in the hold, but she insisted I hand it over.

Upon arrival in Atlanta, the helmet was slow to appear, finally emerging after most of the luggage was unloaded. Worse, it seemed to have been mistreated, with scratches and missing parts. There was also come kind of glue residue on it. A motorcycle helmet is not supposed to take big shocks, as the inner shell which functions as a shock absorber during a fall could get damaged. It is questionable whether the helmet is usable since it seems likely that the inner shell was damaged because of mistreatment in the hold.

I have heard of restrictions on helmets in banks but if space is an issue on a plane, can you wear your helmet?

Short story: Guy goes on a plane, helmet doesn't fit in bin, they put it in the hold, it gets damaged, airline refuses to pay for damages.

ive seen people post pics here on barf when they flew on a plane w/ their helmet and they always just have it on their lap.

Why give them a reason the fuck with you? That would definitely be a reason to fuck with you.

Why stop with just the helmet?

Mine helmet fit under the seat, though. I think there are FAA rules against anything being in people's laps during takeoff/landing, so the flight attendant was correct in insisting he do something with it. Sucks that it got damaged. I probably would have just put it on.

i've flown with helmet and gear to pick up a bike and ride it back

no issues.

I would have put it on and told them I have a medical condition. If they still took it away I'd "fall down" on my way to the restroom... $$$

carry it on like a purse or back pack, leave it off until take off, once off the ground put it on and start talking like you're flying a fighter jet.

If Ya wear your helmet and have a parachute on when Ya go up to the counter to buy the ticket..
They should inform you about their policies.

My old Arai would fit in the over head when I flew from LAX to BOS. No problems at all, I think I might have a had to but it on its side, but no big deal.

I would put it on the floor right in front of my seat, then put my feet under the seat in front, calves lightly resting on the helmet to keep it in place.

Sounds like it might be a good idea to check what kind of plane you'll be on if you're taking a helmet with you. A Boeing 737 or Airbus A320 should have plenty of room both in the overhead bins or under the seats.

Those little commuter planes that I've occasionally managed to get on between San Diego and Los Angeles or between islands in Hawaii don't have as much room.

Maybe off topic, but I think this guy doesn't fully understnad how motorcycle helmets work:

"A motorcycle helmet is not supposed to take big shocks, as the inner shell which functions as a shock absorber during a fall could get damaged. It is questionable whether the helmet is usable since it seems likely that the inner shell was damaged because of mistreatment in the hold."

The liner is there to slow your head as it impacts a solid object. It doesn't get damaged from the outside in, not from being dropped or kicked. I've talked to the guy at Shoei who x-rays helmets consumers mail in. He told me he's never seen a liner become un-serviceable from being dropped on the ground in a non-crash situation. However, if the shell cracks or delaminates, it's time for new one.

I don't know if you know how airlines / bagage handlers work. I put my mountain bike in a box as directed to fly to Europe. I picked it up without the box, and the steel frame was bent in two places. They bent the rear wheel stay in so much the axle woudn't fit in. It looked like someone smacked it with a big hammer.

I think they could damage a helmet.

Of course they could, but in this circumstance I think it's doubtful they did. I am sorry about your bike.

Definite taze material, bro. Unless, you wear a Sailor Moon outfit, then maybe you got the disadvantaged gay prejudice thing going for you and they will just strap you to your seat, fearing a god-awful lawsuit
