I sometimes find myself musing over the weirdest offerings out there.

Like this CBX Super Sport. But, I mean, I cannot picture myself fiddling with 6 Keihin carbs.....or trying to source a new Side case if I bunged one of them up.

I love the Idea of owning a classic, but the reality of having one really doesn't look as rosy.

Other bikes I 've mused over this week, a 1949 Series C Vincent Black Shadow. (They are actually getting soft!, Selling for way less than previous years) , a 1998 VTR1000F, a Ducati SS900Cr, and random weird ones, Bimotos etc...

I'm still at about 60% of my normal self physically(recent bummer), so I've got WAY too much time to "browse listings".

Thank gawd this bike is in Texas, or I just might....

I used to lust after a CBX, until a mechanic told me that in order to get the valve cover off, you effectively needed to drop the engine.

Hard pass.

I don't know about the valve cover, but balancing 6 carbs is a no go for me (like the OP said). Besides, it still has early 80s suspension.
I think it was WC Fields that said "CBX's are like elephants, nice to look at but I wouldn't want to own one"

I think classic superbikes are like the original muscle cars: Heaps of style and good looks, but require significant investment to modernize them to current standards. A CBX is probably too valuable to resto-mod, but a CB900 with modern suspension, brakes, and 17" wheels would be fun...but then you could just get a CB1000F (new) and have a better bike by every measure.

I would

(@moto-rama , that's just an answer to the thread title - I didn't bother actually reading your post :D )

I know better than to get a classic anything. I'd never ride it in fear of breaking something and messing it up.

I saw one of the R/W/B 25th Anniversary (I think) VFRs that would have really, really liked, but...I know better.

Not true. Valves can be adjusted while in frame. One thing to note, is to remove the tach drive when re-installing the valve cover, then replace it once cover is on. If you fail to get the teeth lined up when installing the cover, you can break the part of the head that holds it. Not a problem if you know about it. Shims are above buckets, so not necessary to remove cams. Odd that the CBX wasn't very popular when new, as most of the fours were lighter and faster. Where I worked, we had a two year old on the floor.

Ever ride one? Wobble city.

Go ride a new Kaw Z900RS. Far better ride. FAR!!
