Consider the maintenance work or fixes that YOU need to do to the bike, and factor that into the price. It is ok to pay more for a bike that has had all of the maintenance work done to it recently, or pay less and get a bike that needs some work, but you must know this in advance and be ok with it.
    • Inspecting the bike: if you are not experienced yourself, have a mechanic or an experienced friend check the bike before making a purchase. Crashed bikes:This is even more important if you are buying a bike that is being sold at a cheaper price with damages that the buyer is required to fix. In these cases, doing a frame check that will show any frame/fork/geometry damages is HIGHLY recommended. Do NOT simply rely on the information that the seller is providing, even he/she may not be aware of all the problems. Have the crashed bike checked and know what you are getting into.
    • Clean title, Salvage title A clean title doesn't mean the bike is free of serious issues. A Salvaged title doesn't mean the bike may have any problems. Every case is different. Some bikes are seriously damaged in a crash, but an insurance claim is never made on them, so they still have a clean title. Some bikes have had mostly cosmetic damages in a crash, but the insurance company decided to pay off the bike and salvage the title rather than spending the money to fix it. Know what you are getting into and don't make any assumptions based on what the seller is telling you.
    • Registration: Know about the current registration status of the bike. Check with DMV if you have any questions about any possible back fees and other title/registration questions (out of state title, no title with bill of sales only, etc.) before purchasing the bike.

I've been shopping around, but haven't been that pleased with the selection at the shops around here (SF), and I know barfers seem to have a lot of guns :troy :sniper :wow :cool. I'd like a 12 gauge pump - home security/special purpose type model in good to like-new condition. Let me know if you've got one you'd like to get rid of.
 
Big 5 is having sale on Mossberg 500 combo for $289 this week
 
I have a vang comp custom 870 with all the fixings. Comes with ghost ring sites and can put 00 buck at 25yrds in a 5 inch pattern. Let me know if you're interested and I can discuss the details. Pricing is going to be around 500-700 depending on whether you want the brand new surefire light as well.
 
You looking for defense or a tacticool shotgun?

If you want it for defense and not to look cool, the mossberg 500s or remington 870s that go on sale at big 5 are probably what you want. Go to walmart and get yourself a few hundred rounds of 00 buckshot and shoot until you are extremely comfortable with the gun.

If you want to look cool and have it for defense, then buy whatever you like cause they will all do the same thing. Just know that all these accessories wont help you if you are in a defensive situation. If you go this route, just make sure you remember to buy lots of ammo to go to the range with as well. Nothing beats practice.

Alright, thanks for the replies, I got antsy and purchased an 870 express synthetic last week. Edd1e, that weapon sounds amazing and I'd honestly consider it but it's a bit out of the price range I'd planned on. I'd love to see pictures regardless.

I don't want to be "tacticool" (if that's what people are calling it), but I am researching some additions to this weapon that will make it more effective.

I'd love some of your opinions, so far people have recommended a side saddle shell carrier (4 or 6 rounds?), and a recoil-absorbing adjustable stock. I'd like to explore options for a better sighting system as well. I'm curious about good brands for fitment, durability, etc.
I'm gonna search BARF to see if this topic exists or I may start a new thread to talk shotgun accessories.

I have the Mossberg 500 combo from Big 5 and it's got around 700 rounds through it now. Runs very well and cost under $350 after fees. It comes with an 18.5" cylinder bore barrel for home defense and a 28" modified choke field barrel that I use for shooting trap and skeet. It holds 5+1 and the barrels can be switched out without any tools at all.

I keep mine simple, it's light and it works :) Not pictured is the 5 shot nylon side saddle. it just slips over the stock. I keep it loaded with 00 buck in the tube and 1 oz rifled slugs on the saddle.

Winchester 1300 Defender with a non-adjustable buttstock+pistol grip combo is the bestbsub $400 set up around, IMO.

6 rounds (+1 in the pipe) of alternating 00 and slug. Reliable, compact, and not shitty MOSSBERG quality.
