Your favorite tire patch for roadside repair

And no, I never had a flat twice while on a trip, but I suspect I will now, thank you very much for the jinx! :p
Mine was my own fault. I was on a week long road trip, and I plugged the 1st flat in a small town somewhere in eastern Oregon.

In the past I'd always trimmed off the part of the plug that stuck out. A friend at work had suggested letting it wear off. I only had one knife with me on that trip, and so as to keep it cleaner for food use, I decided to try leaving the tails on. Spoiler: don't.

I'd feel a few small slips as I ran over the tail, then in a curve along a remote road, the plug pulled out with bang and abrupt deflation (vs the original slow leak). The plug I installed then lasted the life of the tire--which was just a bit more than the rest of the trip and return to the Bay Area. Pretty remote area to get a flat, and I was sure glad to be relaxing while it inflated rather than pumping under the Summer sun.

It turned out my coworker who suggested leaving the tails on hadn't actually tried it. He'd heard about it from a friend.

I have one of these for each bike. Not the cheapest or the most expensive, but they seem reliable and convenient.

Yeah I get that. I was heading out for just over a week trip and had new tires put on the day before I left. It turned out that the front tire didn't completely seal when it was mounted and had a slow leak. Just enough where I had to find air each day. That broke one of my cardinal rules, never, ever change anything right before a trip.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check out those motopumps. :thumbup

I had something similar happen! Except it was at a track day. The track-side tire vendor didn't fully seat the bead on my front tire. Everything was fine... until I hit the front brake for the first time. Weight transferred to the front tire, it went flat, and I had a high-speed impact with the ground shortly thereafter. It turns out that having the bead seated all the way around the rim is pretty critical after all ;)

Ive patched countless tires with the plug/patch combo's.
If done right, never leaks.

I'm in the stanky safety seal group. Used them for 30 years when I was an auto mechanic and a few times on my motorcycles. It's important that the plug follow the same path as the nail or screw, or it's gonna leak. I carry wire cutters with the plugs, to pull out the nail/screw.

Another vote for sticky ropes. I never use the adhesive though, just pop them in and call it a day. Never had a failure, fixed lots of tires.
