YZ125 or YZ250???

rsrai go to the "Are Motards ok for the dirt forum" thread and read page 4. Thats the closest to an ad I have.

Im toying with the idea. I had a blast on the DRZ today though. If I were to get a new bike though it would be Pierres. I rode it today and its amazing!

Don't get one of those!!!! I heard they can't even jump the table-tops at Hollister!!! :shhh :shhh

what year is your drz sorry i dont think i ran across the year

Its a 2001 Suzuki DRZ400e. Smooth power soft ride and endorsed by JoeBar;) Its a very clean, new condition bike.

What I don't get is this...You keep saying 250 because of torque, but then you say that 2 strokes are better than 4 strokes.??

Won't any 4-stroke beat the shit out of any 2 stroke (relatively) when it comes to torque?? Isn't that the one area 4 strokes rule over 2 strokes??

He means a 250 two stroke has more torque than a 125 two stroke and hes right. A four stroke will out torque a 2 stroke unless its a 500cc.

The biggest drawback of a 125cc two stroke is the complete lack of torque. They require constant shifting, and staying in the upper rpm range much like an I4 600. Id say go with the 125 to start on since its a pretty good deal though. Then move up to a 250 or a modern 4 stroke like a Yzf 400,426,450.

I would have to agree with alot of what has already been said, first that sounds like a good deal for the 125 if the bike has been maintained and is not going to require alot of cash to get it up to par. Second if it was me and I was dead set on a 2-stroke I would go for a 250 with the benifits being more torque and smoother power making them easier to learn on and in my opinion. 250's are not as hyper-active as a 125, plus when you are ready to us it all the speed and power you want is waiting for you, however 125's can defenitly fly they are extremely quick and light making them a blast to ride! The simple fact is 125's will require more work than a 250 as you will end up slipping the clutch and reving it alot more than a 250 in the same circumstances, making ridding alot busier and replacing parts more frequent, don't let that deter you too much as parts are not usally too expensive for Japanese bikes, just keep the gearbox oil fresh and the air filter clean (and oiled!) and what ever else the manual recommends, to prolong engine life. If you have your heart set on a 125 check out my link (or shamless plug) below as I am selling mine! I happen to be more of a four-stroke guy......

At 5'9"/ 174lbs. I say YZ125, that's what I ride at 5'11" 185lbs and I can keep up pretty good with those 4 strokes on the trails. Yes, it does require more shifting and clutch work but it also wont put you on your back as easily if you over throttle it, like a certain KX250 rider recently did (just playing bad dad). But back to the subject a 125 is perfect to learn on, the YZ I have is my first motorcycle (first bike I've ever rode actually) and it wasn't too much power right off but at the same time as I progress in skill I keep finding more ways to pull power out of it. At that deal and first time dirt rider I vote for YZ125.

Robert, the YZ125 is a badass machine. It'll keep you having fun for a long, long time..

The power to weight ratio is catching up with the 250's in some aspects. I got my 250, and it's way more than I'll use, even if it is outdated and lacking current 250 HP marks.

I would get a CR125 if it were me, but keep in mind the twin spar frames are very stiff. Or maybe a new 125 equivalent 4 stroke motocross bike..

Refer to ebay and cycletrader.com for price comparisons. $2500 sounds about right for a 99+ off the top of my head though.

Depends on how you look at it.

YZF450 vs YZ250 - Yes, the 4 stroke wins on tourqe.
YZF250 vs YZ250 - The 2 stroke wins.

RobertR1 & rsRai,

Just get some dirt bikes.
It doesn't really matter what you get (as long as it's not a CR500 w/nitrous) for your first bike (allthough that 2000 125 sounds like a good deal), what really matters is that you use common sense when you ride. It is fairly common for people to start riding & within a season do an about face on what they like to ride. It really comes down to the group of people you start riding with. Kind of a "good people = good times" thing.

The Barf dirt gang I met @ Hollister is comprised of good people (jury is still out on that Pierre guy ;) ) at all levels of riding, & I believe everyone there that day had a good time riding together, but the coolest part is everyone worked together to make sure everyone had a good time. This is not true of many riding groups.

get the 250. :) the new yz250 is a great bike. the bike is "planted" feeling, and has a great powerband that dosent abruptly hit like some of the other bikes. when i ride technical stuff, i hate having a huge hit. it results me in dragging the rear brake in order to maintain traction. the 125 could be fun too i guess. if you only plan to be "another" track racer poster child ;) get the 125 and get some cool sticker kit that i will envy hahahha if you wanna pull some monster hills, get that 250 and join us for a ride :p

you know im just kidding hahaha get the 250 though ahhahaha

Farmer John has the best advice of all. :thumbup

I'll put a third on that Bad Dad/Farmer John my first bike was a 82' Honda XL125 4-stroke no power, no brakes, heavy.....I had a blast on it!!! Just get out there and ride!

My XL still starts in 1 or 2 kicks after all these years (10), still take it out now and again not advanced by any means but it has 2 wheels that is all that matters.
