On a 2003 Kawasaki ZX6R with about 35,000 miles on it.

The other day I went down to my carport to move bike out of parking spot and noticed that in 1st gear with the bike off and clutch in, it was stiff to move, almost like a brake was slightly applied - this never used to be the case. Bike still off now in neutral and i can push it freely, no extra friction. At first with kickstand up in 1st gear clutch in, it would not let's start the bike...also never been a problem. Put it back in neutral and started bike. Shifted into 1st with bike on, and now with clutch in I can move freely without friction.

So then I try starting from 1st again and this time it woks, but jumps forward slightly, more than I remember. With the bike running in 1st with clutch in I can push it freely without friction just as if I was in neutral. But with the bike off in 1st there is extra friction when trying to push it. What's going on?

I replaced the clutch cable about a year ago. I checked the adjustment and it is fine. Also unplugged and plugged back in the clutch sensor.

Everything seems to run and shift fine, it just doesn't wana move in 1st when the bike is off. It had only sat for about 4 days since I ha last ridden it. I rode it to work today to look for other symptoms but everything seems fine. Checking it now it is still stiff in 1st with bike off and clutch in, but not as bad as it was the other day.

Should I be worried? Like I said it runs and shifts fine..it's only when the bike is off.

Thanks - sorry for any typos I'm on phone on lunch break.

I've had the bike since 13000 miles and haven't done it. However it's possible it might have been worked on about a year and a half ago when my bike got hit on the street. I'd have to find the insurance / shop paperwork for the list of everything repaired.

Difficult to do?

How many times have you ridden the bike since replacing the clutch cable?

Sorry, if these are basic questions, but I don't want to make any assumptions on your skill level here.

1. When you said that the cable adjustment is fine, exactly how much free play did you put in the lever?

2. Is it stiff when the bike is off but still warm after a ride?

3. When was the last time you changed the oil in the bike?

4. It's possible that the clutch switch has gone bad, but that will not affect the mechanicals of the clutch.

03/4 636s are notorious for ruining clutch cables. I've seen quite a few that were "adjusted correctly" but had no play at all. Maybe not your issue, but eliminate the cable/perch/actuator as the culprit before digging into the plates and steels.
