I’m against anything addictive but these nicotine patches seem to be gaining popularity, at least with tech bros, and seem benign.

They’re used to increase productivity much like adderall but they aren’t as strong or damaging (I think).

Anybody try these things?
Thoughts?

Haven’t tried them.
They are used to increase productivity, much like caffeine. Nicotine was developed by the tobacco plant as it’s own pesticide, to kill living things. It is the most powerful pesticide that we know of and most agro-pesticide products are actually nicotinoids. So it is in our feed, non-organic food and cotton. The patch may be less harmful but also is less immediately boosting. The pouches harm the mouth, perhaps the toothpicks less so. Similar to caffeine, this is completely highly processed potent laboratory chemicals being used now, not tobacco.
Side note: in studies of natural caffeine even the pollinators preferred the lure more with the caffeine than without. Plants are smart.

They seem like the next big thing after everyone has pivoted away from vapes.
Maybe I’ll get a tin and see for myself.

They're not new. Those pouch things have been around for decades.

I have friends that started off slowly with the smallest dosage (3mg?) now they order them online and get 20-25mg pouches, I don't see them stopping anytime soon. One's a WFH and the other is a shop manager for an auto shop.

Too scared to try them, I once tried the Skoal green apple pouches when I was 18 (38 now) and I almost passed out lol

Isn't this just chewing tobacco with fancy new flavors? There was some guy at my previous job who would use those, and vape, and drink energy drinks. He shook like he had parkinsons and he was in his 20s.

No tobacco in them, it's flavored nicotine designed to leach into your bloodstream. Literally just the addictive bit.

  • Addiction and Brain Re-wiring: Regular use increases the number of nicotinic receptors in the brain, demanding more nicotine to feel normal and creating a cycle of addiction.
  • Neurotransmitter Release:Nicotine triggers the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine (pleasure), serotonin, and acetylcholine (attention), providing a temporary "high".
  • Cognitive Changes: While it may initially increase focus, long-term nicotine use is linked to cognitive deficits, including reduced attention span, poorer memory, and increased impulsivity.

Intentionally getting addicted to an addictive substance sounds like a dumb idea. WTF world do we live in if someone actually needs an increase in productivity this bad? Capitalism too much, no? And what will you do if/when the positive effects wear off?

While waiting to pick someone up I had time to read more.
Lots of negative stuff - gum irritation and recession, the brain becomes dependent on the artificial dopamine hit hence the addictive nature, a pouch lasts about 60 minutes then you have to pop another.

If a person is trying to quit smoking this is a less harmful way to go.

In general, no bueno. I answered my own question.

Do NOT do it. Nicotine is a very powerful drug and it’s very highly addictive. Much more so than even heroin. And after a short time it changes your personality negatively.

Also, nicotine was not developed as a pesticide. It’s a natural part of tobacco.

My father picked up a nicotine habit when he was in the army during WWII. He couldn’t quit and it killed him at the young age of 54. It is NOT harmless.

Why the hell are you even considering it? Do you have a death wish?

Oh, and my wife’s mother had a nicotine habit. She died from throat cancer with a big hole in her throat.

If you want to quit nicotine, alcohol or illicit drugs, the books for each addiction by Allen Carr are highly recommended.

Related to another thread, using any kind of drug to aid or boost your ability to function in any way is fundamentally aggravating to me.

Fuck no, I do not want this.

I've tried them. It's the same relaxing, lightheaded, buzz as smoking a cig... but without the smoke. I really enjoy the smoke, so I prefer taking a bong hit instead (cheaper too).
If you are a person that can't control your self, then I'd stay clear. I, on the other hand, like to try everything at least once. :smoking
