DUNE

It's doooopppppeee!

Gotta watch it in the theaters if it's possible. Aside from the killer cinematography, world building, and set designs, audio is such a big component of it.

It's in HBO max streaming fyi.

Will definitely watch but at home on my 60" plasma.

My 5.1 system has a 1250 watt 15" subwoofer so I should be in good shape.

Watched it with the neighbors on their thunderwall of FX.
Hit most of the points without dropping the ball too badly.

After mom kicked some butts, when Paul is coming down the hill in a stillsuit followed by Chani,

"OMG! It's Edward Scissor Hands!"

The navigators don't fold space themselves. They use clairvoyance provided by the spice to predict the course through folded space.

To Skarsgard's performance, I felt his was a more accurate portrayal. Brooding, sinister, the basso voice. I really loved Villeneuve's take on his appearance. Don't get me wrong, I think Lynch's Baron was great and perfectly fit the world he built, but he was a bit of a caricature compared to Herbert's writing. Fwiw I also love Lynch's Dune.

Regarding Paul, he's a scrawny 15 year-old. I think he was appropriately cast in that regard. Chalamet's performance was passable but I did find him a bit wooden at times.

Chani could have been hotter? :rolleyes

It's funny I avoided clicking on this due to "spoilers" but I've seen the original, mini-series, and read the book.

I think I'll see it in theaters to get the full experience.

If there's any problem with it, it's that it's a little masculine. I mean, I get it--the book was written that way. But if we're talking 8,000 years in the future, you'd think that women would have progressed a little. Jessica could barely walk in her Japanese-looking footwear that she dons in the palace. There was still talk about Paul marrying one of the Emperor's daughters in order to form a peaceful alliance. I don't need to see 90 lb chicks kicking ass in a war scene the same as a man, but can she at least have comfy shoes around the house and not be a in burka and walking behind her man during her first trip to the new planet?

Otherwise, I thought the movie was great. I could talk a lot more about it! I'm a huge fan of the book and even liked the 80's version. It's fun to compare the two. I'm so glad that they allowed this movie to take its time. If I had a complaint about the 80's version, it would be that it felt like it really rushed things during the second half. That's the industry's fault though--different story today when 4 hr movies and sequels are the norm.

+ $0.02

The nose snood didn't do much for me either.

IMO Jessica's subservient outward appearance belies the great power she actually wields.

Anybody wondering if the beings healing the Baron are intended to be Tleilaxu?

I do understand that. I just wonder why it has to be that way. (It doesn't.) She could be a large, powerful woman, with features that are not necessarily traditionally beautiful. She could have been brown or black skinned. The movie also could have omitted the "I should have married you bit" and eliminated her being his concubine without hurting the story at all.

I dunno...I can't relate to many of the other characters in the movie, so I'm speaking to what I know (to some extent). Just tossing it out there. You'd think that with Hollywood getting kicked in the balls so much lately that they'd brown/boob up. It's fun to see different stuff. This is a totally fictional world--seems like they could have mixed it a up a little.

I mean, wasn't the contrast there the whole point of casting Hollywood Darling Zendaya as Warrior Woman Chani?

The model shows the Empire and Bene Gesserit as antiquated models of thinking that serve an anachronistic system on the road to collapse and the Freemen represent the progressive change in touch with the natural order that fate requires?

Every time I try to stream it on HBOMax that piece of shit freezes my Xbox and I have to kill the app to unfuck it. really starting to piss me off I didn't have any issues with any of the other MAX movie drops on day 1. Wound up watching Black Widow and Wrath of Man instead.

That particular scene did not instill the awe in me that it probably should have because I kept picturing Bender from Futurama in there. By the way, I see your giant pict and ante up.

Had a similar issue when trying to stream Foundation on Apple TV. We just waited a few days and it worked better for us.

I guess I’ll have to be the sole contrarian here. I never read any of the books. I watched it on HBO Max. I was underwhelmed. The pace of the movie was painfully slow for me. With that pace, I would have expected more character development. I honestly didn’t really care about any characters in the movie.

I'm with you, I too was underwhelmed by Denis Villeneuve's version. I have read the 1st book and seen the 1984 Dino De Laurentiis film which I thought did a good job of portraying all the key characters and condensing a 600-page book into a just over 2-hour movie.

Villeneuve's score was abysmal, gave no life or drive to any scene. I did like the dragonfly ornithopters though; they matched Herbert's description pretty well and they looked cool in action.
