DUNE

It certainly dug into the details more than a lot of books of its genre, particularly at the start, but I think it's important because there are a lot of people in the story. It would be confusing if the book didn't give you time to read their names repeatedly and understand where they fit in and why. The end of the book, where there's this gigantic, chaotic battle scene would have been kind of "meh" if you didn't know and care about the people involved.

It reminds me of The Iliad (or is it the Aenid) in that way. The entire darned book is nothing but a list of the people, their lineage, their accomplishments and how they died in different, horrific ways. You wouldn't care if it was just a guy who died. But it's Bob, with a sword in his eye bleeding out on the field with his friend Claude at his side--master of spitballs, son of Floyd and Agnes, brother to the owner of the deli on the corner who makes the best pastrami sandwiches, husband to Myrtle, the beautiful mother to his two kids, George and Luanne, who chased the cat down the block into traffic last summer.

:laughing sounds like the Silmarillion. Essential read, if one is a Tolkein fan like me. But no way am I reading that thing twice!

That reminds me of that book George "can't finish a series" RR Martin did for GoT instead of finishing the god damned series. Can't remember the name of it right now but it was short stories based on genealogy. IDGAF just finish GoT for fucks sake I mean look at Robert Jordan (WoT) that fucker took so long also Sanderson had to finish them and hacked that shit to get it into 3ish books. Although I do like Sanderson as an author.

Watched it again the other night just to catch things I missed. I like the movie but can't help but feeling it's a 2 1/2 hour trailer for part 2.

Whenever part 2 comes out, I'll likely just sit down for 6 hours (accounting for pee breaks if I'm at home :teeth) and watch both back to back. Assuming that's still option with HBO or theater. My local theater did a double feature of Quiet Place 1 and 2 not too long ago, so this is a likely possibility.

Tried reading the book years ago but gave it up. It was… tedious.

I actually enjoyed the movie though. Yea I was lost at parts but I’m intrigued enough to want to watch more.

The Filipino Martial Arts they used caught me by surprise. The Atreidis salute looked a lot like my lineage’s salute so I did some digging to see if anybody from Serrada/Inayan was involved. Nope. Looks like they used Balintawak Eskrima as the basis for the bladed combat.

As I understand they also had to develop or adapt new martial art nuances to reflect the way the personal shields played into combat.

Anyways it's cool that this movie is bringing new fans to the franchise. The argument has been made that Star Wars prob wouldn't exist if Herbert's novel didn't exist but, you can argue causality all day.

Yea that was actually lost on me. I didn't understand how the shields worked. I just thought they eventually failed after repeated hits.

"The slow blade penetrates the shield." It's not a metaphor (or maybe it's also a metahpor) but it's how the shields work. They're good against bullets and blows, but some of the weapons slow way down and they're able to get through.

The way shields work is that they block fast moving objects like projectiles but allow slow moving objects to pass through the shield aka the slow knife or kindjal projectiles which move slow in the book. I know its all sci-fi BS but I wonder if the slow moving particles passing through the shield is how they rationalize the shield wearer not suffocating from lack of oxygen in the shield environs. Anywho it is all based on velocity as to what gets through or not. Do they mention the lasgun/shield interactions in the movie?

I checked last night and I can finally stream the damn movie so I have it planned to watch Saturday night.

They did not mention the shields/lasgun interaction.

Also unrelated...

The new Dune is sorely lacking in Sting wearing a space diaper.

Wanted to see it Thursday at Alamo but their last showing is 3:00...why is it only in theaters for like 2 weeks/

The shields allow slow moving objects or blades to pierce them and if you actually shoot them with a laser gun it causes a massive nuclear explosion that kills everyone...which is basically why they have reverted to martial arts and hand to hand combat in the future.

In the 84 movie I think Duncan was killed by a slow moving bullet projectile. Either way the special effects for shields are much better these days.

One more thing I never get from the original movie is that the Honored Mother says the poison only kills "animals" so not sure if she pricks him in the end to show he's NOT one...? Or does he just pass the test?

She doesn't stick him. The implication is that animals can't control their impulses and if he jerked his hand out of the box he doesn't have control and is therefore an animal.

What's odd to me is that the baron is being played like Colonel Kurtz/Marlon Brando. The wiping the sweat off the brow, the mannerisms...almost an exact copy from Apocalypse Now. I guess I see some parallels, but it's like they want the audience to make that connection by having the baron basically copy Kurtz. As if he was once a great soldier but now has gone mad. I get the impression that the baron was always this brutal.

Makes sense thank you

Originally I thought that she pricked him and if he didn't die he proved via his actions he wasn't an "animal" and somehow the poison wouldn't work but that makes no sense.

Been avoiding this thread. Now that I've watched it my only regret is not catching it on the big screen. Move over Star wars :later

Finally saw it last night. Not super familiar with the overall Dune story other than my vague memories from the 1984 film.

I really enjoyed this movie despite that it was mostly about world and lore building. Didn't mind that it was low on action because the cinematography delivered otherwise.

I'm a little concerned that the twist at the end makes it look like a white savior story. that's my beef though.
