Let's hope this thread is short on Bay Area Fire Season

I guess Florida must be unable to shore up against hurricane damage and flooding and unable to figure out insurance because Florida leadership is so heavy into DEI.

Also, DEI exists solely for the purpose of hiring on merit. If people aren't doing that, then it's not DEI. Same as how a priest molesting a little kid, isn't representative of religion. Same as how a pack of dickheads ripping around on dirt bikes in a city, isn't a representation of dirt biking. Same as how a guy shooting someone for their wallet, isn't a representation of gun owners. People understand this concept just fine with everything else in the world, just not when it comes to blacks/gays/minorities/etc. If only we could figure out why that is....

for over a 100 years responsible forest management meant extinguishing all fires no matter where they were. This meant that areas that usually burned by fire in a fairly reliable cycle loaded up with ladder fuels that made the fires when they happened much worse.
This is one of the factors that has lead to fires being hotter and more destructive.

Palisades does not have much fire history, but that one from 2021.

I wonder if there was any lessons learned from 2021.

DEI hires ARE meritocracy. Hiring a non-white, non-male doesn't mean choosing a weaker candidate. It means, given equal candidates, you hire the one that more closely represents the population at large. It means breaking out of the 'Good Old Boy' mentality and hiring from the community at large. That's diversity. That's inclusion.

another factor in these types of fires that are not strictly wildland is people built houses in forests, then more people did.
Guess what has more of a fuel load, a tree or a house.
 
Have you ever seen a fire break? Embers fly for miles. In the Tubbs fire, the fire jumped 101 and took out 1500 homes in the Coffey neighborhood which is 1/2 mile away.
How do you rake thousands of square miles of chaparral?
 
Brentwood now at risk and with the winds starting to flare up again tonight into the week this is going to be a long fight.
Saw that international fire fighting crews have arrived from Canada and Mexico. Also the Military is gearing up to join the fight.

The views of tankers dropping water and retardant from the air makes me smile for some reason even though I know so many of my fellow humans have been fluxored.

Fire breaks or fire roads slow down the fire they prevent fire storms


Also, need fuel reduction zones


People will wonder why property taxes are so high-- Well, it will be maintaining fire safety and undergrounding power lines.

If a freeway can't stop a fire storm, a firebreak won't. Look at the topography of the hills where the fires started. Where, how do you propose cutting in a firebreak?
 
That pic is kinda finny, because none of that green stuff is going to burn, but those dry chips/leaves on the ground sure will.

A freeway is also a firebreak, but firebreaks are less about passive protection and more about active defense simply by providing access.
 
Those fires were pushed by 60-100 mph winds continuous for a couple days.

Does anybody think they have a way to stop a fire under those conditions?

Forget the looters, the LA landlords are apparently taking full advantage of the huge increase of people looking for homes after their loss and are getting greedy as hell.

It's time for Newsom to do his job and start dealing with this type of shit, first with warnings, then huge fines.

Thousands of people have lost homes in LA and displaced victims say they are facing sky-high rental prices and hotel fees.

Oppenheim said his business was offering its services for free and had received dozens of calls from people who had lost homes.

Speaking on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, he described sending a client to visit a property where the landlord had previously been asking for $13,000 per month in rent.

"[My client] offered $20,000 a month and he offered to pay six months upfront and the landlord said 'I want $23,000'," he said.

"There are price gouging laws in California, they're just being ignored right now, and this isn't the time to be taking advantage of situations."
