Barf Sponsorship for the Cal 24.

If only! Keeping average speeds (including stopped time) above 43 - 45 mph over the 24 hr period is not trivial; only a very small portion of the route will likely be on interstates or equivalent. You can count on 16+ hrs of the riding to be on smaller twisty roads, which doesn't leave much time to make up on the higher speed roads. Don't plan on having enough time for more than 1 or 2 20-minute naps, it's unlikely any finisher will have enough time for more and still complete the rally. From what I've seen, most folks don't nap at all through the event.

Okay.. Good point. I'm familiar with the rally but I've been out of the scene for a bit. This isn't X-country.. It's the rocky mnts, where the big boys play.

I remember dreaming about this Cal24 Rally back when I lived out in Florida.. and here I am!! This is what it's all about.. Traveling.. meeting people and having a good time. Sucks we have to work..

When I decided on the 50cc I tried to get my employer Alltel to Sponsor me but.. no love.. I didn't think they would anyway.. but it was worth a shot..

So I did it anyway.. and I did all right, 40hrs it took me.. but there is no prize for finishing early.. that's the lesson I took from that experience.. I rode too fast and didn't sleep when I should have.. tisk tisk on me. I could have been more relaxed and rested up like the salty guys who arrived later in the night.

So now I fully understand, without a shadow of a doubt, about going fast but not frenzied, good time keeping and as much sleeping if I can.. is the key to staying in the game.. and alive for that matter.


That would be neat.. I'd say.. Nominate me if ya want.... I'd do BARF proud.

The FJR is a great bike for this. Lots of fun farkles you can do to them.

It's impressive the riders who go on CAL24. Long ride, need to find places, be at check points at certain times and the long distances.

Lefty would be good at this type of ride. Like the energizer bunny, keeps on going and going. No signs of fatique. At the end of a long day's ride, Lefty still has the energy to hit up a park ranger or motel manager

I think it was 2003, two people made it across country on a Busa.. They had relationship moments but no mechanicals.. heh.. Speaking of wuss.. I rode a R1150 RTP home from Los Angles Saturday night.. Nice bike but I frogot about muscle cramps, my legs were cramping bad.. too much coffee..

I'm a noob when it comes to rallies, but having someone take care of that huge entry cost sounds great. Plus it would get me another sticker for my KLR650 which I would ride. I have a custom seat and have done 9 hours on it without any probs before.

This would be my 1st rally and I would love to represent barf on it.

Got a Garmin Zumo and a cell phone. I talked with Tom Melchild the other day (rally guy) and he said it is all good for noobs to ride.

I tried to get my dad (68) to go in with me on the ride but he balked hard at the $200 entry price. My dad has done the HOG Posse rides where they go coast to coast and all east states of the Miss and all west states of the Miss.

Besides, if I do go on the ride I can get the hard bonus points by riding on dirt roads if there are any.

Welcome to the madness . It gets addicting real quick.
FYI the $200 entry fee is only the beginning . You still need to pay for at least one night in the motel (two is better believe me) heated gear if you don't have it, food, gas, new tires (sometimes before and after the ride, tune up, and on and on and on. If you belong to AAA you can get your maps for free otherwise they cost $ too.
And the $50 minimum donation to the charity on top of everything else.

Well worth it in my opinion, this will be my 4th cal24 in 5 years. And I paid for the one I missed but couldn't get out of work at the last minute. This year I hope to do the rally for under a grand. But I've said that every other year too . Every year I add something for the rally. Aerostich, heated gear, HID lights, radar detector, GPS. This year I want an aux. fuel cell and a laptop ( to help with the gps).

Not sure what sticker you're referring to. Like I said I've done three of these and haven't got a sticker yet. If you mean a SS1000 cert. from the IBA yes you can qualify for one if you do 1000 in 24 but you will still need to submit to the IBA for it and pay the fees.

And speaking of the SS1000 cert. the rally vets will tell you that this is a hard ride to get one on. Much easier to just ride to Vegas and back. This rally is alot more fun when you're not focused on the cert but get in to the scavenger hunt aspect of it.

Nine hours on your bike is a good start. Do that several times before the rally and work up from there. There is a HUGE difference between nine hours and twenty three hours on the bike.

And if this year is like the others it ain't gonna be a leisurely cruise on the interstate. They don't call them Rally Bastards for nothing .


I'm not trying to scare you with how much it costs to do this, hell, I'm probably underestimating by 40-50% again. . I really enjoy this rally and I'm usually about 100 miles in to the ride and I'm already planning for the next year.

Thx Bronto! I haven't done as many as some, but I've got a few under my belt (stories here). I do tend to like the northern start point (dunnigan) rather than the southern start (king city), and the good news is that the 2008 rally should be starting in Dunnigan.

Heated grips and auxillary lighting are on the shopping list now.

I'll be doing many long rides between now and then to get used to the Zumo GPS and being able to get where I want to go without having to mess with it too much.

April 6th to the 18th I'm gonna head down to Vegas, through the Grand Canyon, up through Colorado and New Mexico, Kansas to visit my daughter in Omaha. Then through the Dakotas for some sight seeing, down through Yellowstone, Salt Lake and the back side of Nevada.
