Yeah, I've seen it in person. A BMW dealer of North County brought out a silver one to Buttonwillow as a promotional thing on 6/21/09. I sat on the bike. I didn't feel at home on the bike. I do admit that there's a lot of nice features on the bike. Base price around $13k and the ABS electronic package around $15k. But for me, it didn't do much to sway me to buy the bike. Personal opinion is that the bike had cheap plastics. Don't know how to explain it. But then again, it's just my opinion. The front is okay. But didn't do much to please the rest of the other guys out there too.

Funny thing is, I'd asked the dude if he was taking the bike out on the track. Dude smartly replied that, of coarse he was. That's why they brought it out. Dude crashed out going into cotton corner at BW on the first session. Dork. He was all covered in dirt lying on the tables and the bike was fawked up. He'd even blamed and told every one (his BMW dealer staff, LetsRideTrackDays's staff, and the other riders) that some one came up behind him and hit his bike while he was in a right hand lean. And he pointed to the dent on the exhaust to support his claim.

Funny thing was, a friend of ours (Derik, races wera too) who was control riding that day saw the whole thing. Explained that the dork had pasted him and another control rider up like he was an AMA racer or something and was hauling ass into cotton corner. Dude locked the rear up and high sided. There was no one around him.

I believe thats now an "Ex-BMW rider"...

There were 4 such bikes in the US, being used for promotion at trackdays etc. Now there are three.

I actually found it decently comfortable for a race rep bike. And the evolution of the traction control is interesting.
 
They claim it's based on the GSXR. But after hearing one run at an open house, I would swear the engine is based on the early Bloor Triumph.

i sat on it and liked it. it's small, and feels pretty light rocking it back and forth. looks like they've been tracked already, as the tires were fairly thrashed. leg room was a little tight, i'm 6'1"

looks better in person than in photos, and the weird headlights aren't so weird after all.

too bad they don't sell one in the BMW motor sports colors.

edit: one thing i didn't like was the frame finish, it had a rough surface and the paint looked pretty cheap.
 
Those bikes your seeing are all pre-production models...

Expect at least one more round of refinement before floor models hit.
 
Comparing it to all the other new liter bikes it seemed cheap and hideously ugly to me. Wierd plastic everywhere.

Felt like a literbike, but I'd spend my money elsewhere.

They shouldn't have had it parked next to the HP2 Sport, which is gorgeous and exotic in comparison. Made the RR look dumb, imo.:laughing
 
Odd thing was while the guy was getting the bike though tech inspection, I had this feeling that the dude was going to crash it simply because he was too excited and jumpy as well as cocky to get the bike out to show it off. I just got my bike out of tech and rode off. We didn't pit very far from the bmw crew so I had notion to my bud to take a look at the BMW bike and what a shame if he wrecks it in the first session. Sure enough, he fawked it up.

Derik controls ride for LetsRideTrackDays and Ti2TT. He said that, that same bike was also out at Pahrump a week or two earlier at Ti2TT's event. He said that there's only 3 bikes out in existence so I doubt BMW of North County is going to be able to find parts to fix it. LOL.

It's all good though. I'm glad the guy was physically okay. I think the only thing hurt was his ego.

About the bike, yeah it had wierd plastic everywhere. It looks like a R6. My disappointment came from the bike not having Ohlins forks. I thought since the bike was having Brembo calipers that it would also have Ohlins. But who am I to say. I'm sure any BMW is better than my GSXR.

I agree on the headlights. The bike looks much better in person, not as weird as the photos.

There will actually be the 4th color choice, which is the BMW Motorsport colors (red/white/blue).

The bike's suspension is Sachs. The S1000 RR rider said it works really well on his bike. It's probably one of those where the difference is between really good and a bit better. I guess we'll find out when the bike is out. :)

I want to see the claimed 180 hp on a dyno.

I wonder how the ABS stacks up against the ABS on the CBR1000RR.
 
It felt pretty comfortable just sitting on it, much better than the Japanese bikes. (I'm 6'6" and don't get to say that about too many bikes.) Hopefully the suspension comes ready for massive Teutonic riders as well. It looks much better in black than in yellow-tan or whatever that other color was. salesman quoted the price at $13.8k, I think, and said there should be enough of them to have demo bikes at dealers next summer.

from what i've read, its gonna be an option to get the M colors.
if you're referring to the "orange peel" look, BMW paints their cars like that as well. its an process thats hard to duplicate. So you can tell if the vehicle has been repainted before or not.

I was there Sat and Sun, except for an hour I took for lunch on Sat and another for suring the race on Sun. And I was there representing BMW Motorrad... can't figure out why Triumph wasn't there either. :)
