we made the wheels and parts of the "mother ship"

NASA really didn't like JPL putting its name in the tread. In the second design JPL added some "holes" to the wheels. These were to allow Martian dirt to drain from the wheel assembly. Maybe some wise BARFER can spot what else those holes were there for.

PS, I look like ass after a 12 hr shift at 4 am. oh well.

The cutaway shows the thickness of the webbing between the treads. We got it down to about .060"

These are parts to the "mother ship". They don't look as impressive as the wheels but they were actually MUCH harder to get right. This is an early roughing stage.

Jeebus that's alot of things that have to go perfect just to get the thing safely on the ground! That alone would be an accomplishment. Those wheels look bad ass! I hope the mission is successful. I'll be looking forward to hearing about it. You should post up a new thread when it all goes down.

Some buddies of mine worked at NASA a while ago and were given a project.

If one were to describe all the features this particular widget must do, you'd be all, yeah we can do that-might fit jn this room, maybe, but yeah, doable. We can do this project.

They said "good-it also has to fit in this", and they were handed a coffee can.

Weeee.

I was at JPL about 10 years ago on a consultation for a couple projects. We were totally impressed with the hot room where testing of a completed unit was being performed.

Well done JPL!

The Chinese are hacking the NASA data base as we speak...Clever of them to incorporate that into the chips they made...They don't have to make the expense of landing a craft...they can get all the info from ours.
