Passed on the left in traffic this morning...

OP...technically since the rider in front of you was riding in the left-hand side of the lane, you should have been a bit more towards the right side of the lane. And the person behind you should have passed on the left of your lane. Which is what happened.

Right?

You should not have been riding on the left part of your lane because you would have been directly behind the rider in front of you.

are you talking to the op ?

yes. or anyone else who gets startled when being passed from behind while riding/driving. Situational awareness can save your life (or someone else's).

Really? Because the rider behind you is the center of who's universe? He was referring to cage drivers. Cage drivers stuck in traffic with no intention of moving between lanes have no need to check mirrors.

you only check your mirrors when changing lanes?

because nobody ever gets rear ended, right?:|

He never said he doesn't check his mirrors.

Antagonize much? :|

Did you read his other post? No comments on that one?

I don't always check my six while in the process of splitting. Allot of it has to do with, once again, speed delta. If I'm splitting quickly, and I realize quickly is subjective, I'm focused on cages changing speed, changing lanes, squeezing me, etc.; but, once I clear traffic and find myself in a gap, I'm all over the mirrors. OP cleared traffic, was in a gap ... and got surprised.

No wheelie? Supermoto dude in shorts fails to deliver.

Seriously, +1 on what the Hun said.

First time somebody said to me passing on the right is safer. I would have assume the opposite. I always chose to pass another rider wherever there's more room, even accounting for other lanes if it's the case.

Am I the only one that thinks it is a little weird to use a GoPro for everyday commuting?

Sure it was a rude pass but it also shows your situational awareness was asleep. Consider it a cheap lesson on improving your awareness of your surroundings.

I don't think it's weird at all. It can save your ass in case of an accident. I use it more for commuting than I do on fun rides. I don't really care to watch footage of myself riding, does nothing for me. Sometimes it can be useful as a diagnostic tool to shake bad habits.

I try to not pass other riders, but when I am behind someone for a while and I see they are not planning on checking their mirrors any time soon, I just throttle and pass them on either side.

It's called lane sharing and it's legal.

Not sure why you think he was in the wrong. You seemed to have pushed the accord over the yellow line when you passed at the beginning. As far as the bike passing you, both were in the same lane. Lane sharing works both ways as people have said before. I usually try to pass people on the left, just like passing traffic on a two lane highway. I would be more worried about people changing lanes into me if I were to pass on the right of the person in front of me.

Most folks don't expect to be passed on the left when riding or driving in the far left lane.

When lane splitting we pass cars within that lane on the right, not the left.

Driving a car in the fast lane I expect motorcycles to lane share past me on the right, not the left. I would expect the same on a moto.

Or do folks lane share to the left with cars in the fast lane too?

Then why not lane share past cars to the left too? Then you wouldn't have to worry about cars changing lanes either.

Yes, you are teh weird for NOT using your camera. :x I use my Contour every day, both ways. :thumbup

OP - you were asleep, the passer did a nice job of giving you and the Hardly Driveable a good margin.

And the comment in your YouTube is great:

The guy was probably sitting there for a hot minute while you were off in la la land.

Hahahahaha, sportbike got passed by a supermoto ON THE OUSIDE xD

To be fair, you should have been in the 1/3 position, not 1,2,3,2,3,1,2,3,1,3,2. How else was this guy supposed to pass if you're day dreaming of Dump Trucks in the 2/3 lane?

I do. I will take that side rather than having a car change into my lane during slow traffic. Stopped traffic I'll share #1&2. Lanes are big enough to share either side especially during rolling roadblocks.

... startled me at first, then kinda pissed me off...

Key word here is "startled."

We *never* want to be startled while riding. You want 360 degree awareness always. Honestly, were you watching your mirrors?

WWWobble

One tip for reduced commute drama, if I'm in the #1 lane, not splitting, and traffic is below the limit, I stay to the far left side, watch my mirrors, and expect to be overtaken in my lane. But that's just me...

This.
