Just need an inexpensive receiver to hook up a pair of cheap and small external speakers for the TV. Don't need anything fancy.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Sounds like you don't need a home theater receiver at all. Just pick up a cheap/used stereo receiver. Yamaha is indeed a good sounding, reliable, relatively inexpensive brand.

Best Buy open box section.

Ask for a further discount on top of whatever they have is actually priced at.

Cnet reviews if you want the best tech bang for the buck.

Otherwise, monitor the feed at Slickdeals.net - a killer deal will pop up there within a few days.

Denon. Accessories4less.com often has really cheap refurbished stuff with warranties.

+1 for Denon or Onkyo, but op might be looking for something more practical/cheaper. Yamaha makes decent receivers for a little cheaper

Just a reminder if you want to use the good old 70's-80's and cheap equipment for that.
New tv's are digital so you'll need a D to A converter to get sound into the receiver. At that point the tv remote won't control the level so you'll have to get off your ass to adjust volume.

Ask me how I know this.

You definitely want something that has at least 3 channel capability for watching TV as a center channel is mandatory for clear dialog.

An old used Pro Logic receiver would work just fine, (assuming your TV has an analog audio output), if it does not then something like this would be perfect; under $200 and will handle any upgrades you might want to make in future, (ie. digital surround).

Radio Shack special! :party

I don't believe they sell audio equipment any more.

Back in the day I bought quite a few speakers for secondary systems from them.

Still using three of them in a 3.1 system in my secondary TV room, (the ones with the weirdass Linaeum Tweeters).

3.1 is actually a great way to go if you don't want to deal with the hassle of rear speakers.

Sounds much better than a soundbar, for example.

Well, not in stores anymore but glad to see they are still peddling equipment even though not under their brand names any longer.

That's a great price for a stereo receiver but for watching TV you really need a receiver that's 3.0 capable at the very least.

The center speaker really doesn't have to be a perfect match sonically from the left and rights to do a great job.

I'm a dedicated two channel guy but you don't need a center channel for clear dialog, you don't need a center channel for anything really. RCA labs already did this work when early stereos were going to be 3 channel but it was proven unnecessary.

I bought a 5.1 yamaha system from Frys 3 years ago for around $350? It's pretty good. Home theater stuff is pretty cheap now.

I just added a center channel to my daughter's 2.1 system that they use for Vinyl and TV, (she was running an old perfectly serviceable Denon Pro Logic unit I gave her).

As the speakers were at least 5 feet from the side of the screen the center channel made a huge difference.

If the two channels are close to the screen, or touching it, the impact would be less.

Yes, for $350 you can get some great stuff.

Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, Sony all make great stuff in that price range.

Only Sony has something in the under $200 range that I could find.

My main theater AVR is a Denon and I think it sounds better than the far more expensive NAD AVR I had before it the NAD lost its digital inputs and then its analog inputs. :wtf

hmmm thanks everyone. Yeah I think I only need a stereo receiver lol. This is to set up two small cheapo external speakers to a tv in the bedroom. Was thinking to spend under $100, but sounds like that's out of the question? All the receiver needs to do is be able to operate the speakers :laughing. Going to hook up a pair of RCA cables from the comcast box to the receiver?
