Ninja 300 for sure. KTM will be a bit quicker and more aggressive in the handling department, but less comfortable as a day to day commuter. R3 is a good bike from what I hear, but no slipper clutch and no ABS, also, when it comes to head to head comparisons folks say that the Ninja's suspension is superior. Ninja 300 is also a very reliable bike, the only person that had engine troubles on the Ninja 300 forum is myself, which I am attributing to a probable lack of proper oil changes by the previous owner. Overall I have been super happy with my Ninja: it has enough good highway manners to handle South Bay to San Francisco commuting duties, and can keep up with my friends bigger bikes on Skyline while being a hoot. One other thing to consider is the big advantage the Ninja has in the availability of aftermarket parts: many of the older 250R parts fit the 300, and even the 300 alone was around for a bit longer then the KTM and Yamaha.

almost 10 more hp-40 less lbs-price you gotta pay for performance, at a price point made in india.:laughing

:laughing
And your wall of text describing all the mods you did to keep it from grenading.
OP is looking for a reliable moto for his lady, not a project.

Damn, that 690 is lighter than the Ninja 300!

Out of my price range though. :thumbdown

So no Ducati scrambler sixty then? TBH it seems out of place on your list in terms of price if not in terms of engine size and power.

I think for a second bike any version of the CB500 would be good, or the FZ-07/SV650.

Of the ones you listed I'm curious where the BMW will land. yes it will be built in India, but BMW will be in charge of quality control so it might be pretty good.

Not to thread jack here, anyone have ridden the R3 to back the comparison to the Ninja 300?

FWIW, I have contemplated the idea of selling my SE non-ABS 300 and replacing it with a R3.

Sounds like a ripper on the track once it's sorted out though.

All the used ones popping up on CL scare me, too many stories out there about reliability.

I hated the suspension on the r3. Power was good, brakes were good, but it wallowed everywhere.

I did at one point consider getting an RC390. The main argument for it was that I have a friend who rides a single cylinder motorcycle, so I figured one day we would be out riding and my girlfriend would call me and ask me where I am at, and I would say: “I don’t know of a good way to tell you this, but I am at a singles party”.
*laughs maniacally to himself and runs out of the room

though if u all had RC390s, u might have to tell her its a lemon party.

:D

Spoke to dealer today.

Can get a CBR250R ABS for $5K OTD, but there is currently a recall on them and a stop sale.

A Ninja 300 ABS is $6K OTD.

Those 2 bikes are on my shortlist although I'm still thinking about the Cb500

I'd go with the R3, and since it has 41mm forks, I'd be hounding ebay for some Honda CBR600F3 cartridge fork internals to drop in there. :teeth
(popular mod for the 41mm forks on the SV650)

Why? Just get the Andriani or Ohlins kit.

a very good cheaper alternative are the ricors that gregg spears has made up for him.put them in the track R3 and work very well.have andreani's in the rc390-also work very well.

The F3 wasn't exactly known for high end suspension. Better to do it right from the start imo

crank recall for 250,300's-no bueno.ninja 300 is a lot more bike than cbr250 even for 1k more.

Go with the Ninja, the extra bit of power it has might not be all that relevant for street riding, but it's a big difference for highway riding. Not saying the CBR will not go on the highway, it will, but it is not going to be a very pleasant experience for your wife.
