2 stroke engine trouble shooting

demoni thanks for the links, i haven't had much success finding that kind of stuff on the comer engine i really appreciate that... but also you suck :twofinger because you mentioned the head studs. i figured i'd break them loose and retorque. 1 of the 4 loosened... funny. 3 of 4 torqued down just fine and now the 4th keeps spinning. well, it would keep spinning i stopped about 1 turn after it should have tightened up. threads are borked.

this is me eyeballing the little predator engine from harbor freight vs fixing this one

footnote: the phrase "the most expensive cars are the free ones" goes for gokarts too!

FWIW I recently rebuilt a cheap little 2 stroke motor. The crank seals were generics found on eBay. Made the gaskets from gasket material. They can be rebuilt pretty easily.

finally got the kiddo ready and had some time (and it took about forever to clear enough junk (i have pack rat tendencies) out of th way to get a useable section of workbench) to investigate the engine a bit

here we have the flywheel, looking dandy replete with undamaged keyway

and here we have the corresponding keyway and key and taper of the crankshaft also in fine condition

i also found Darth Vader

The bottom of the taper is about where the back of the flywheel is when installed SO, that the crank seal is out of place seems to be A Problem. Flywheel removal involves hitting stuff with a hammer which, if that caused the seal to jump out of place that's a problem too. I was able to basically slip the seal in the bore with my fingers and easily pull it back out again, it seems fine against the shaft. There is also what appears to be a little sealant on the edge of the bore but nothing looks damaged. I'm going to get some new seals (haven't finished making the puller for the clutch side yet but while i'm at it, might as well)

I'm wondering if someone used a "close enough" equivalent seal and attempted to keep it in the bore with the sealant. The crank seals are apparently an area that "cheating" can be done with a slightly looser fit, though the loose fit should be around the shaft not the bore, but who knows?!

the engine has been apart before that's obvious. hopefully i don't have to go any deeper

no pictures, but the other side is the same seal by the ID numbers and isn't falling out of the hole. hummm. also looks to have some sealant around the OD.
