#11 JUAN CARLOS SALVATIERRA (BOL)

... we were talking a bit about Mr Salvatierra’s
KTM XCF 450 race bike high-pipe/fuel tank set up ... he was
a withdrawal on Stage 7 with a broken frame ... :dunno

... the race bikes need a 250km range (155 miles) according to the rules,
and the modern late-model fuel-injected engines can get up to
50 mpg on the trail according to people who own them ...

#90, GABRIELA NOVOTNA, is running a near-stock high-pipe
Husqvarna FE 450 with just an after-market
front tank ... goal was to make a light-as-possible rally bike ...

Ms. Novotna had a close call,
and you can see her light bike being
picked up ... :party

... for those of us that
remember $12k JVO rally kits,
Ms Novatna’s and Mr. Salvatierra’s
approach to 2018 is fascinating ...
I think most Malle Moto guys are
mounted this season on $30k KTM 450 Rally racers ...
be interesting to see what shows up
to race next year ...

... another interesting thing is how
few “engine swap” penalties there
have been so far, another testament
to modern 450 cc singles ... though
it is rumored that some of the
factory teams are replacing the
piston (and clutch) on a regular basis ... :thumbup

I know it's been mentioned, but it's kind of crazy
how good the bikes' engines are now.
To be able to go an entire dakar WOT at
ten thousand RPMs without changing out the motors?

I feel like I can smell that black mud. :laughing

Never fancied the idea of a manufacturer challenge unless it was done riderless on test machine.
 
Wow, the race just totally blew up on the second special stage today... all the fast riders except Walkner and Van Beveren got lost and then Van Beveren crashed hard just 3 kilometers from the finish.

Walkner now leads the overall by almost 40 minutes from Barreda and Benivides
