2020 F1 SEASON

Apparently the error was made because of faulty radio gear.
I'm not sure I buy that, I think that some of the guys got caught out late in the race not expecting another pit stop at that point. They must have all known that Russell was in the lead at the time, you'd have to be an idiot to grab Bottas's tires by mistake in that environment since they must have all known that both drivers were coming into the pits.

Weren't Russel's hard tires newer than Bottas'?

Did they really need to stop him vs just stopping Bottas?

With the field getting closed back up, they were nervous that the drivers behind on newer tires would have pace on them, Perez was not that far off the leaders pace and he's known for making tires last.

Russell and Bottas were supposed to both get medium tires. But, they put 2 of Bottas's tires on Russell's car, which left none for Bottas because tires are matched to cars and you have 3 laps to change a tire if you make a mistake with them, like they did. So Bottas got up there and they realized that they had made a mistake, the only option was to leave Bottas on the tires he was on or a different set of tires (I'm not sure what they did) that were all his, then to bring Russell back in and fix their mistake.

They put Bottas' old hard tires back on. That is why Bottas was falling back.

Even with the "Colossal Fuck Up" in the pits, Russell was looking like he just might of still pulled off the win. When he got the call that he had a puncture, I felt really bad for him. He ran the perfect race and had the win ripped from his grasp.

If I remember correctly, a while ago I heard Russell being compared to Hamilton and that Russell deserved a ride in a good car. Well he got his chance and proved he does in fact deserve the good ride. Hopefully, he will get a chance to further prove his talent (maybe this coming weekend if Hamilton is not cleared to race).

That slow leak on brand new tires that likely hit some carbon fiber debris deprived us an excellent dogfight at the very end.

Russel is the real deal.

He likely easily quadrupled his future net worth with that one drive. :laughing

"I don't speculate...", Kimi, when asked how much damage was done when his car caught fire in practice....

It's a shame he's contracted w/ Williams for another season.

What does Russell have over Bottas though? Bottas has been a great team player. I like Russell more as driver, but as a team manager I'd not want him and Hamilton on the same team. Rosberg and Hamilton was not a good combo...

Bottas is 31, Russel is 22.

I didn't see it, but my brother tells me that Russell absolutely dominated the other drivers in F2 and GP3. In his F2 series he raced against Alex Albon and Lando Norris.

Russell has it, no doubt. How many more years is Hammy gonna stay? That's the track for him, IMO.

I think Hamilton will do 3-4 years then call it.

He's still got it, but at some point his full spectrum of skills, knowledge and mental toughness won't be enough.

He doesn't seem the type to just hang on, it's kind of sad to see Kimi towards the back of the pack.

By then, Hamilton will have put down numbers that are extremely unlikely to get eclipsed in his lifetime.

One thought....what would happen if Hamilton went to Redbull and Russell came to Mercedes. :teeth

I don't think Hamilton will move to an inferior team. He's going for records, like you said Brett. One thing to consider is how long F1 racing will remain relevant too...

I'm wondering if Hamilton isn't secretly thinking that maybe he should have let Russell take his place for another race. I don't think that his stamina is fully recovered and I'm not sure how it will hold up for the whole race tomorrow. This track has more turns than any other race, IIRC, and the track entrance from the pits is that tricky tunnel. It's not a track that you can run on auto pilot.

Boring final race.

Hamilton should have stayed home and let Russell race for Mercedes, he clearly wasn't in proper condition to run a full lap in qualifying, much less a whole race.

The only other real option for an interesting race was Perez working his way from the back, but when his car failed early, it mostly assured a boring race.

Stroll couldn't get the job done, I would take Perez over Stroll if $10 Million additional prize money was on the line for the team to take 3rd in the constructor's. I get the feeling that Stroll wasn't sophisticated enough to figure out that LeClaire was saving his battery for the 2nd DRS zone, so that he could only pass him in the first with DRS only to get re-passed in the second.

Vettell showed his colors once again. I wouldn't want him on my team, he's only a team player when he's #1 on the team. We've seen this before.

The track was very interesting for qualifying, but for a race it sucks. in 2019 there was only 27 passes. Think about that for a minute, with 20 racers. With the way these cars are currently configured, there is very little passing each year.
