75 Years Ago- Auschwitz

In regard to pretty much any atrocity, I see quite a bit of the arrogant "that could never happen today" type of thing and from events that are just one person ago.

I disagree. I don't think anybody agrees that it was an anomaly.

What's important is that people recognize the possibility and jump in sooner than later when it happens. The longer something like this goes on, the more ingrained it becomes with the people doing it and those turning a blind eye.

Similar things have happened since the holocaust, they just weren't allowed to go on for as long and grow to the extent that it was done in Germany.

Only if you ignore the gulags of USSR and Chinas cultural revolution and Pol Pot's genocide in Cambodia. That killed far more people.

And we agree on the need to recognize such tendencies early enough to prevent it.

It is happening today to uygur muslims in China and my bet is that once the regime in North Korea falls and we get to find out what has happened there for the past 50years is gona be "shocking" to the same level the holocaust was.

Even the USA has had concentration camps and mass murders by soldiers.

Never again.

Also, really cool time to throw in, "but but but but....xyz was worse and killed more people" you guys. :rolleyes

If the Nazis had won WWII, the Americans and allies would have been the evil people being discussed.

There was no "but..." in there. It was a clear "only if you ignore..."

There is no doubt the USA leadership would be put on trials for crimes against humanity for blowing up two civilian cities with Nukes.

Were the combined populations of Germany, Italy, and Japan large enough to force subjugation on all of USSR and USA even at the beginning of the war? Even if the Nazis had sued for better terms through "victory" it's not likely they could have ever forced the USSR or USA into subjugation. The entirety of the Nazi effort was doomed to failure as soon war was declared. At best they would have been able to hide it for a generation or so three. The horrors of the death camps would have eventually been revealed over time.

The mistake is assuming that nazis were any more evil than anyone else. All (ok, most) humans are capable of evil acts.

I both love and hate the calcification of the holocaust as "this is what genocide is" in every living person today. It was a reprehensible act that was put forward by awful people and perpetuated by the morally lazy.

But it's far from the worst genocide enacted by humans, and there's ones that are still happening today, some of which we perpetuate, yet turn a complacent eye to because they look very different than shoving human bodies into gas chambers and then into ovens.

I watched an interview the other night with Geddy Lee on a Canadian radio station. His Polish Grandmother and parents spent time in a number of concentration camps, Auschwitz, Birkenau and Bergen_Belsen among them if I recall.

It's an interesting and poignant story; one that is not being told often enough any more.

What a disgusting display of what this species is capable of. Yes, I know the Nazis weren't the only ones to participate in genocide, and genocide still occurs today.

These atrocities must not be forgotten; only when they are remembered can we as "enlightened" beings hope they are never repeated.

Not trying to stir up stuff for the mods. But I figure if nazism and concentration camps are ok to discuss, commies and gulags should be too.

Far too many people that are all to aware of the nazi killing machine are deeply ignorant of the horrors of the hammer and the sycle. I blame partially the Hollywood bias that only really likes to tell one story over the other.
This is just a well narrated example of such:

75 years ago the poor wretched souls were liberated from Auschwitz. The horror of what happened there cannot be erased.

I’m certain each of us, regardless of faith or nationality, knows someone whose family was touched by this atrocity.

Nie wieder.

The only thing worse than a Nazi is a Commie, and the Commies killed far more people in camps than the Nazis ever did, like, it isn't even close, but this is not the place.

Interesting history. I suspect a large percentage of humans have a line of code embedded in their brain that when triggered will allow them to take part in such torture for sport activities.

In the past communities would show up to enjoy witch burnings, hangings, canings... Modern day burning people alive seems a favorite of isis.

If we took a poll would the majority align with Schindler or Mengele.
