75 Years Ago- Auschwitz

Guys, it is VERY important that this thread does not wind up getting dumped into a political forum.
Really look at the photos that Godsdarling posted. REALLY look at these.
Can you honestly say removing the rights of other human beings, that marginalizing entire segments of the population, that desensitizing ourselves to atrocities is OK?
Can it with the "no U" dialog, can it with the "other countries do it too" crap.

"On January 27, 1945, the Soviet soldiers opened the gates of KL Auschwitz. Prisoners welcomed them as genuine liberators."

This is what this thread is about.

Interesting history. I suspect a large percentage of humans have a line of code embedded in their brain that when triggered will allow them to take part in such torture for sport activities.

In the past communities would show up to enjoy witch burnings, hangings, canings... Modern day burning people alive seems a favorite of isis.

If we took a poll would the majority align with Schindler or Mengele.

If you enjoy mulling thoughts like this over (or rather, hearing someone else do it for you) and enjoy listening to particularly LONG podcasts (this episode is four and a half hours long) I strongly encourage you to listen to this particular episode of Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" podcast. It's a very good meditation on the very root of why humans sometimes seemingly enjoy watching others in the deepest of agony - covering topics of medieval and more ancient forms of torture all they way up through lynchings.

Once you let yourself believe that there are more important things in this world than human life, it is seductively easy to be led down very dark paths.

Sure, also let's look at the stats for murder and rape and terrorist attacks in nationalistic countries like Japan, Poland and Hungary and compare them with France, Sweden and UK in the past 5years since the UN has opened the floodgates of mass imigration. Maybe, just maybe there might be some merit to it.

My family's safety is more important to me than strangers are. That's what nationalism is. Same reason your parents probably have an open door in your house and you chose to screen the strangers that get the privilege to come in.

G made a polite request and she a nice lady, so..yanno.

exactly

The ability to see people as less than people, is rooted in the same ability to view others as more or less important because of abstract notions like country

A person is not more important to me, cause they were born in osklahoma, as opposed to Japan

We're not in disagreement. Not everyone is welcome in my house (though in my case, you generally need to have been in my house, before you become unwelcome in my house), but everyone is welcome to have their best opportunity free from persecution. It's when you start thinking "I need to prosper so it's ok that these people suffer" that things get dark, fast.

And once you learn to see it, you see it everywhere.

Genocide is a decidedly political act rooted in ideology. Whether it’s the holocaust, or Rwanda, remembering HOW what happened is every bit as important as remembering what happened.

I spent hours in the genocide museum in Rwanda, Ive reflected on photos and accounts.

Only one step from “these people must suffer so that I may prosper”...

I get it, you are a Marxist. You made it clear plenty times.
I dont think anyone deserves to be exploited, but also I understand that to expect a perfect and or fair world is an utopian idea.
Again, I dont think nationalism means exploiting others necessarily although it cant be that in order to provide for your family it might require to be less generous to strangers. And I'm fine with that.

I dont even understand what you try to deny it. You are cliche to a fault in everything you say politicaly. I wasn't even trying to get under your skin with it. It was a simple statment of fact.

I'm exactly my genuine self and I am true to it. However people choose to categorize me for their own convenience is their shortcoming, not mine.

Yes it is, and January 27th marks the day of liberation for the mere 6000 survivors of a camp that is reported to have murdered millions of fellow human beings a mere 75 years ago. .

An outrageously horrifying event that should shape our worldview in its wake

LOL , suddenly, a well-known poster who insisted on posting anti-Communist diatribes in a Holocaust thread :rolleyes, "supports" a conservative government which restricts democratic and human rights... : | (e.g. removing abortion rights for women..in the 21st century in Europe :facepalm )

Wow, so surprised. Next up from the list of stereotypical posts we'll see "I agree with Hungary too!"

...after reading the speech I agree with Marian...

Apparently he didn't take even a moment for self reflection in the 3 weeks he was banned.
