80s Cult Classic Movies list

I put a link to the wiki page that did define what a cult movie was. And there are many definitions that are argued by people who actually understand the medium and spend their lives immersed in the minutia of film.

but yeah, one more time.....with feeling

Thanks for the link.
Missed it the first time.

A cult move is one that never did well or is little known, but has a small yet dedicated fan base. IMO.

A 10,000 word essay with 186 footnotes on "cult film" must be a frustrated film major's failed PhD thesis.

Like pr0n, you "know it when you see it". It needs a certain quirkiness.

Take "Night of the Comet" mentioned a few posts up. Two hawt San Fernando Valley sisters fighting off a zombie apocalypse with automatic weapons? I've seen it at least 3 times and hope to watch it again someday. Though it was a critical flop, according to IMDB, it shot for $700,000, grossed $14,000,000. Can't beat that 20% profit. ;)

"Dead Ringers" took a completely different route to cultdom. Highly regarded by the critics and won a bunch of awards. But grossed $9M and cost $13M. Still, it's got the quirk. Very creepy. "Horrific, disgusting, grotesque" writes reviewer at IMDB. I've seen it a few times. Not sure if I'll watch it again, tho.

@ DD: Cronenberg movies have always been visuaully "challenging", to say the least. :laughing

I thought he got robbed by not even being nominated for "Eastern Promises", which was a fantastic movie from start to finish and holds up over time.

The Last Dragon

anybody say Coming to America yet?

Flash Gordon

Flash Gordon too big at release to qualify as cult classic?

hell yeah...! :smoking

The Warriors just missed the 80's mark... released in '79 I believe.

While not a cult movie per say I think DieHard was fricking awesome.

I remember that, it had Gynecological Tools for Operating on Mutant Women and starred Jeremy Irons. It came out around the same time as The Fly.

Akira, in case it hasn't already been mentioned.

The Decline of Western Civilization, if documentaries are allowed to be considered cult films.

Henry - Portrait of a Serial Killer, might be considered a cult film. Don't know if there is an active fan base exactly, but it is a very powerful and polarizing film in how it depicts cinematic violence. I recall Fangoria saying that it was the first film that the MPAA did not give the option of cutting certain scenes to obtain an R rating, it's overall tone was just too dark and disturbing.

Fitzcarraldo.

I think another aspect of 'cult' is a film you love - and are willing to defend -even though most folks will think you're an idiot for liking it.

When you find your people who also like that film, you've found your cult.

Streets Of Fire
Big Trouble In Little China

Lao Pan! Ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny!

Also, any Canadians care to explain what "hoser" meant from the movie Strange Brew? When I was little watching it with my friends, we thought they meant "poser". Takeoff you posers!
