95 mpg

I suspect the error is in my calculation of battery pack capacity or something. Otherwise, the Volt would need to travel around 180 miles on it's battery pack to get the reported results

I'm reading their explanation and then doing as real world calculations as I can get. KW to KW and not getting the same results. I don't want to call it marketing but that's what it starts to look like. The explanation leaves out methodology so I'm digging that up.

we know how much "juice" the battery holds. We know the motor's draw, and range. We know the energy output stored in a gallon of unleaded gasoline. the EPA lists 33.7kwh as the equivalent of gasoline in their MPGe calculation.

seems all the calculations use BTUs for the fuel, kwh for the electricity then figure BTUs per kwh? why not just convert straight to kwh and be done with it?

Most of the energy going from gas goes out as waist heat in a Internal combustion engine, while most of the energy going into a electric motor is used to propel the vehicle. Regenerative braking and electrification of accessories are also other efficiency gains.

Commute traffic is a poor/dumb persons problem. No way I would waste time sitting in traffic. There is no traffic in the hills where I work and live. But even so, much rather be sitting in the comfort of my Mercedes. Than in some ugly shit box that screams: "I'm a emo cheapskate."

Ever hear, you are what you wear? Well, you are what you drive too. The car a person drives, says a lot about a person.

I'm guessing you find your way onto a lot of people's ignore lists.

This is the Bay Area Riders Forum, so I would think a lot of us live and/or work in the Bay Area. And the Bay Area has shitloads of traffic. So are are you pretty much calling the majority of the members here "poor/dumb" because we have to deal with traffic?

But hey I can do highly opinionated inflammatory posts too. Been doing it here on BARF long before you.

If my Z06 outperforms pretty much any fucking Mercedes ever made short of a SLR McLaren (or do you commute in a $300k car), and by your own words "I am what I drive" well then me > you.

I'll chime in here as a counter to all this Horse shit.

Horse has a Mercedes. There's not one Mercedes on the market that a CTS-V doesn't make look like a clown car in performance (Minus the CLK63 black series). So, by proxy, Horse is in a clown car, in the mountains, as well. Horse, I know a guy who has nice house in Aspen, Co...drives his 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee around while his wife drives the Denali...even drove his old, green Jeep to his personal Jet. His house? Across the street from David Faber's 12 million dollar house. His neighbor? The Crown's from Crown paper and one of the families who own the ski company in Aspen. His other neighbor? Guy owns 12 franchise auto dealerships...he's in good company and right off the ski slopes. Yet at that house, he drives a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Sometimes you just get beyond your pay grade...right?

that ends up looking worse. two gallons equivalent battery storage for less than 40 miles. My Tacoma returns better than that.

what am I missing? did I drop a placeholder somewhere?

The battery will only drain down about 10.5KW when its total capacity of 16.8KW. Perhaps that's the explanation Rick?

it's equivalent energy in gallons (roughly 36kWh/US Gallon) and then add that into the total of the vehicle's fuel reserves.

Wikipedia says "officially" you can use the battery for 35 miles. the battery is listed as using 35kwh over a hundred miles. So there's what, 17.5 kwh used there, or an additional 1/2 gallons of gasoline
Given your numbers, I think this is where you went wrong.

The battery will only drain down about 10.5KW when its total capacity of 16.8KW. Perhaps that's the explanation Rick?
If we take Holeshot's numbers:
Then 10.5 KWH used/drained over 35 miles traveled.
OR
Roughly 0.3 gallons over 35 miles. (assuming 33.7KWH/1.0 gallon gas)
OR
112 MPGe (I think the official number is 98MPGe, so we're off somewhere)

Back to your numbers:
379 miles per tank.
9.3 gallons plus the 0.5 gallons of electricity = 9.8 gallons
Driving a single trip 379miles / 9.8gallons = 38 MPG

But as stated, very few go 379 miles in one trip, so the more times you plug in, the more you get to take advantage of the above calculated 112 MPGe portion of the vehicle.

We aren't talking about CTS-V, that is a mans car. This thread is about the Volt, a chicks car, or clown car.

I've got a 2012 E63 AMG, 550HP, 7sp trans. I go out often. I sometimes take clients out when they are in town. Not going to make people climb in though a two door. I need a decent sized back seat. My car is every bit as fast as the CTS-V or CLK63 black. My last car was a S class AMG. In my business, which is not green, you wont be taken seriously driving a cheap clown car. Bonus for me, I can write them off.

Yeah, I know plenty of very wealthy people who drive old pieces of crap. I'm not wealthy enough to be that eccentric. :laughing

:laughing Only if you're insecure or compensating for a small dingle....

Keep saying that to yourself. :laughing

Everyone judges. From where you got your degree, the clothes you wear, where you live, and especially what you drive. Everyone does it. Your parents, the girls you date, your friends, your coworkers, your clients. Everyone... If you think it does not happen, you are lying to yourself.

But that isn't why I drive a nice car. I drive a nice car because I can.

If you want to see my dingle, just ask. Its the most magnificent dingle most people have ever seen. I'm very proud of it and will show it off at every chance. But you will just hate me more. Because haters gonna hate! :laughing

I never get battery pack capacities right anyway. Every time I do a napkin sketch EV I probably want too much battery.

aha, 250ml got it. I flipped the fuel capacity. NOW it makes sense. thanks!

Are you sure you are not confused with NiCd? Cadmium is banned material like lead its very toxic and and Cadmium positioning cases are well known.

Summary:

Lead Acid- Bad
NiCd - Bad
NiMH - "considered non-toxic to humans"
Li Ion - "considered non-toxic to humans"

But dont lick your fingers after handeling a a broken battery or feed any to babies.

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/health_concerns

The compound lithium is absolutely toxic to humans; in fact only moderate multiples of therapeutic doses of the pharmaceutical version can be lethal. What the EPA has concluded is that it's not a hazard to humans because it doesn't accumulate in the ground/groundwater. Funny, they said the same thing about MTBE 20 years ago.

I've had Vettes in the past. Can't stand them. Worst pieces of shit I've ever owned. This is one of the reasons I wont ever buy another Chevy product. The fit and finish is garbage, they rattle and fall apart. Check engine light was always coming on. Cant imagine the Volt being any better. Looks like it is made of cheap recycled plastic.

My AMG is every bit as fast as any Vette, and carries 5 people with style and class. Set it to comfort mode, and its a luxury car. Try that with a Vette.

That first part is pretty fucking funny. I get the rest of the sentence, but you bring the rest of your opinions into question when you state falsehoods like that one right there.

Sweet ride. Bet it's fast as fuck. No way it'll get beaten by any electro-weenie green car, right? :laughing

Look up the specs before you laugh. Before you make yourself look like a fool. 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

I've done plenty of track days and am a pretty good driver. There is practically nowhere that I can floor my car for more than a few seconds in the Bay Area. Fucking car is way too fast. This isn't my first hot rod. I've owned Vettes, 911 Turbo, M3's. Mercedes has gotten serious as of late. Don't believe me, go drive a new 550hp E63 AMG. Turn off the traction control and hit the gas. Its no track car, but for the street, way WAY too much. If I were going to buy another track car, it sure as hell wouldn't be a Vette.

PS- This discussion is way off track. We aren't talking about performance cars, we are talking about VOLT clown cars. :laughing

Your Mercedes Stock is 518 HP...but worse than that, it's significantly slower than the CTS-V around a road course. Nice cars, boat like handling and horrible resale value. Fingers crossed you leased it and fingers crossed you don't get audited..that luxury car and all that gas does have a limit (and it's the first thing they look for). Somehow, I'm getting alot of bullshit feeling, given those two statements alone. The CTS-V is still a bit quicker than the Black Series around the course as well. It's clear as day with that last doosey, that you just wing it when it comes to getting it correct. Explains a lot, really.

Got it...anyone here can confirm you're any good at the track or owned any of these cars? There's alot of bullshit on the net ya know...and being as how you're unfamiliar with the HP on your car and all...

Yeah right! I wonder who was driving the Mercedes, the owner of Tesla? My car is loud as fuck, tires screaming when I take off in performance mode. You can see/hear the E65 wasn't on the gas at the beginning. Nice try. :laughing

You can make an electric car fast, but then be out of battery very fast. Then what happens when you want to go on a long drive? Your greenie ass is screwed. No thanks.

Its not a track car, its a daily driver. The older ones have 518hp, the newer ones with performance package have 550hp. Read the spec on links just posted above. I don't care if other cars are faster. I cant use the HP it has. Even 518hp is more than a person can use. I care that I have a very usable back seat, and the car is very comfortable, even on long drives.

I can take pics, but then you would just say its someone else car. I'm not posting personal info on a forum. You want to meet out, I'm game. I'll bring the car. We can do a little drag race for shits and giggles. If you want to measure dicks, we can do that too. But have met you at the AFM races, you are about a foot shorter than me, so don't know if it would be fair. Unless you are very unproportional. :laughing

BTW- nice dress you wore to the AFM banquet! You have some style!

But quit trying to change the subject, this isn't about AMG, its about crappy Volts!

Democrat.

Oh shit.

You.
Did.
Not.

You did.

You really want to play the "mine car is better than yours" game? Come at me bro.

do we set a price limit? so for all of you 100K plus car owners, I'm pretty sure we can build a couple sacrificial lamb vehicles that will bury y'all in performance before grenading :)

MTBE was a shame.

The big difference from gas and diesel and lithium ion batteries is that lithium batteries does not spill on the ground, leak in underground tanks, spill into waterways and get burned and dumped into the air.

The reason there is not more pollution from regular lead acid batteries is because they are worth ~$10 when they are dead to recyclers.
