Purchased another SV a while ago, just now getting around to doing maintenance that should have been done a while ago. It sucks to be in an apartment where you are not allowed to work on vehicles.

Here are some photos from day I brought her home:

Don't know a whole lot about the bike. The previous owner was kind enough to list all the things done to it for me, and I must have misplaced the paper.

The only thing I have done to it was an oil change, and cleaned the chain as best I could.

I dropped it off at a repair shop for a multi-point inspection so I can see what if anything needs to be repaired, replaced etc. Also the bike was either set up for a heavier rider, or maybe was tracked at some point because it is way stiffer than my pervious SV which was 100% factory.

I will have to figure out what was changed and get it set up for myself.

Also looking into painting or trading plastics and tank because red is my LEAST favorite color when it comes to paint.

Once I get the inspection report back, I will know more details about the bike and what will need to be done. Updates are fun.

Enjoy,

James

I think I have the same bike--same year and color, anyway. I just rode it down to LA to participate in a Motorcycle.com comparison test--my SV vs. the new KTM 690 Duke, new SV650 and FZ-07. Really versatile bike.

I think it's hilarious you sold your last SV in 2004 and are now buying the same bike again. I had an SV for a few years back then as well, from 2001-2003.

By the way, I have a crap-ton of first-gen SV parts, including forks with Racetech Emulators inside. I'm in Oakland if you want to swing by and see if there's anything you need.

damn that paint is clean for 17 years old

edit:

that entire bike is clean for 17 years old lol

I had an 02. Replace the fork oil with 15W at the earliest opportunity.

What's up with the frame bolt that's sticking out in your photos? I guess he had a frame slider that broke off?

Yea I sold my first SV due to an accident and the then GF (now wife) loosing her mind.

Thanks, once I figure out what needs to be done to the bike I will send you a message. I also have a buddy who has the same year bike whos is i nfar worse shape so we may need parts for his.

Yes I believe its missing the sliders. Assuming they took most of the hit from the fall or whatever. Will replace those!

I was very surprised at the cleanliness of the bike for its age as well, that's why I went with it. The bike isnt without its scratches tho.

I forget how he/she laid it down but its been down in some way.

The one I sold you? That's a haul. How is it running? I have a crap ton of first gen parts too, including a full M4 system race mount with fresh repack. :ride

"Also, this sticker is like sun baked on and is being a total pain to remove haha.."

Plastic fender? Try a hair dryer to get it good and warm, just enough to soften the adhesive (but not HOT) so you can peel it off. Work on small sections.

Ill give that shot, thank you.

Try scraping it with an old credit card, then a razor blade if that doesn't work.

Good way to scratch paint.
Soak with WD40 and use your thumbnail to scrape off.

I wouldn't use gasoline on a painted surface.

Fremont Suzuki still has my bike so I got bored. Picked up a new helmet as I was not happy with the HJC Carbon I was using.

The HJC had a few issues I was no longer willing to put up with which were

1. Fogged up like crazy in cooler temps
2. Whistled at speeds over 45
3. When over 65 (highway) looking left/right it would pull pretty hard
4. Visibility was not that great
5. Felt very big

In my defense, I got it very very cheap.

I tried on another HJC as I did not want to spend loads of money but after trying on the RF1200 and Arai Signet Q I ditched the HJC line. Salesman told me my head shape would fit the Signet Q better, but trying on them both I felt more comfortable in the 1200. Realistically I could have easily went with either one, I really liked them both. The Arai did have the better features I suppose but I went with what felt better. Plus, I was able to order the Shoei in Matte black and it was cheaper.

I really liked how how customizable the Arai could be with the padding. Shoei can be changed as well, which I may have to do after I get some riding in and the padding broken in.

Kind of got sold on this pin lock design feature. The helmet came with the anti-fog insert so well see how that helps visibility in cooler weather.

I also recently picked up an RF-1200, coming from an HJC CL-17

Holy shit, so this is what a helmet is supposed to feel like, nothing

I keep my old CL12 around to remind me to continue purchasing Arai.

I went from a Cycle Gear brand helmet to a RF-1200, and I too had the same holy shit feeling. It's a great helmet :thumbup

I was hoping the road noise would change, but it did not. I suppose I shouldn't be too picky. It is a nice choice so far. Im sure once its fully broken in it will be really nice. Its a bit snug right now.

In other news, I got the bike back this evening after its multi-point inspection. I was hoping for a bit more detail but I guess no news is good news.

Items that I brought up for the inspection

Possible exhaust leak - This was confirmed, but said this is due to the use of the aftermarket pipe and my stock parts not fitting correctly. I suppose I could try to realign everything and tighten things up to see if it will go away.

Backfire - Another issue relate to aftermarket exhaust so I was told. Apparently there is a hose that needs to be pinched off/plugged when removing factory muffler? This was not done and once it was the backfiring has gone away.

Items unaware of brought up by the inspection

Rear disc will need to be replaced at next brake pad replacement
rear brake switch is melted but its still functional
left fork seal is showing small signs of leak so was told to keep an eye on it

Tomorrow I will find the melted brake light switch I guess since that seems to be the most urgent issue.
