99 SV650 Part 2

After a quick ride this morning, I brought the bike inside to take a closer look and see if I could find this melted brake light switch. The shop didnt exactly highlight the area and my SV manual is packed in storage.

Realized the report said nothing about air filter so I thought I would check it out.

Found this first... Im sure this is some type of airbox mod, searched on SVrider but came up short.

Pulled the filter out and found this.. Not sure if its normal.

I soaked up the oil. Probably purchase a new air filter as well.

Hey no worries, I had to do some digging to find the cached version of that page. Great information there :thumbup

Did a nice 60 miles today. The miles are slowly adding up. Everything seems smooth. I think the brakes need attention, they're pretty soft. Although I guess thats nice. Need to ride another SV to see if I am just imagining things since its been like 5 years since I have been on a bike daily.

Had some free time before family stuff starts for the weekend. Mounted my GoPro to the RF1200 based off a video I found on youtube.

Also, I switched out the plastic adjusting knobs and replaced them with allen head screws. If anyone is interested they are M5 .8 20 mm screws. They fit absolutely perfect.

Here is the link I used for the process

The one I sold you? That's a haul. How is it running? I have a crap ton of first gen parts too, including a full M4 system race mount with fresh repack. :ride

Ha! It runs pretty good. 50-plus MPG on I-5 doing a steady 73 mph. It does run rich at idle. The forks are hammered, though.

Don't worry about the oil in the airbox, mr. 510. It's normal. tuners will reccomend a pair of spacers under your front gas tank bolts to allow extra airflow to take advantage of the modified airbox.

I think there are two shims under needles, maybe take one out? I have low mile forks you can have if you want to pay shipping.

OP, that filter mod only works well with big jetting and full pipe. A more correct filter would be the K&N, unmodified. You could be getting lean pop.

So I rode my SV down to LA to help Motorcycle.com with a shootout story:

A good read if you're interested in the new SV, which is a peach and a killer deal.

Nice video Gabe. Not at all interested in new bikes. Thank you for posting regardless.

In other news.. I mounted my phone for GPS via a Ram mount x grip thing as mentioned on numerous threads here on barf.

It blocks the gauges, but also does not fit on either side after the grips. Ill see how it is while riding. Im sure I can figure out where to put it. I was also thinking about changing bars to something that puts me in a higher riding position, so there's that.

I bolted mine to one of the handlebar clamps, so I can see the idiot lights and speedo. I see your tacho face is peeling like mine, lol.

Subscribed. Project510 she's a beauty!
I'm looking for a couple of first gen parts myself. Gabe and nakedape I may hit you up for a couple of things in the near future.

I did try to attach it to those like 70 degree bends just after the mounts, but the bottom piece of the mount does not fit underneath. I will try directly after the grip again or just rotate where its at now.

Yes the gauge face is peeling. SVrider forum has this link to a user who has created a new sticker but it is a few years old. While the website is still up I am not getting a response so I am not sure yet if I want to order it.

Thanks Doug!

I am looking to upgrade the headlight, as while riding at night it is not very bright. So far from reading the best option seems to be to upgrade the H4 relay via this kit here from Eastern Beaver.

Just out of curiosity I opened up the headlight to look inside and found a few interesting things.

1. There appears to be two wire holders that should be bolted somewhere and wire held inside them that were just laying inside.

Also, there were quite a few spots of the wiring that are wrapped in electrical tape but I was unable to feel if they had been cut and reattached.

Im just now realizing the poor quality of the photos from my cell phone. Ill get better photos tomorrow.

Anyone have experience with installing the eastern beaver kits? Electrical was probably the only auto shop class I slept all the way through.

Excellent! I do not see the SV or even Suzuki listed in the compatible motorcycles section. I guess all I need is the thread pitch. I will poke around the website to see if they have any info listed.

Thanks Gabe.

Just doing a little research on a more powerful bulb made a HUGE difference on my SV. It's been about 5 years since I bought it, but if you REALLY wanna know I could check later what it is.

The SVrider forum has that info Kevin thanks!

It also mentions the brighter bulb will pull more power through electrical system so upgrading the wiring helps just as much if not more.
