ALEX HONNOLD ROCKS!!!

Makes more sense as to why he’d go through all the training, planning, preparation and execution.
I imagine he needed a permit from the government that included some sort of hold harmless agreement in case he fell.
And imagine having to placate his parents who were undoubtedly horrified at the idea.
You should check out his previous work. This building was a walk in the park comparatively.

I’m sure Netflix did a lot to accomplish this.

Going to Yosemite later this week for 3 days. Since there's no snow in the Valley going to show the Grandkids the start of Royal Arches, the boulders
at Camp 4, stuff at the Manure Pile Buttress and maybe scramble up to the base of Glacier Point Apron. ( Note: Royal Arches and several climbs around it were closed last year. A new crack in a cliff on the western side of Royal Arches appeared near the climbing route Super Slide, this crack has partially detached a large pillar of rock, and that cracking was actively occurring.)

My favorite "biner" - CHOUINARD and the Grak at Glacier Point Apron.

100K for 13 minutes...Where do I sign up?

I'd either make it or die trying...right?

All jokes aside...Alex is incredible.
Climbing Half Dome in 4 hours was super human.
Regular people spend DAYS doing it.

The pro climbers I knew lived, ate, breathed, dreamed climbing. It was all they wanted to do, only working long enough to restock and get back out to their next climbing location. It was a very consuming passion for them.

I don’t think his parents were horrified at all…his mom is an accomplished climber too. I believe she is the oldest woman to climb El Cap.

Alex is from Sacramento and he used to, maybe still does, climb at Pipeworks, where my wife worked and where we met.

13 minutes? You be a climbing god if you did that climb in 13 minutes. Took Honnold over an hour and a half.

I appreciate the info. I never heard of him until this thread.

When I got started in waffle stomping, early 70's Yosemite backcountry.
I would roll past Camp 7 and watch the fun of downtime, a bit different than hanging by a fingernail, , , off the top. "Go Climb a Rock" YMS, T-shirt too. wore that one out, and replaced it. also have a "Go Surf a Rock" Morro Bay, companion.
and
Yes, I found the need for something that will never be back, climbing gear with a name on it.
It goes everywhere, with me, on my 'Stitch Bag.

The thread title "Alex Honnold Rocks" works for me because it's so true.
Alex is great on rocks.....not so much on buildings.
I know he has bills to pay, but this seemed like such a departure from who he is/was as a person.

I really enjoyed the movie Free Solo. It taught me a lot about his mindset....or so I thought.
That movie felt like a sincere peek behind the curtain and tried to teach us about some of the more subtle nuances of his sport and life. I was drawn by how his (then) GF struggled with rationalizing his activities while trying to navigate her own insecurities about what he was doing. I found it to be a humble look into a very complicated world.....and that was the appeal of the film for me.

This building climb was absolutely none of that. From the trashy pre-game blathering to the overly caffeinated spokespeople who had nothing to do with climbing. They even featured some wrestler clown that spewed annoying hype from beginning to end. Added to the circus-like atmosphere were the bozos in the buiding snapping shots of him at point-blank range from within the building.

I view climbing as an art form, not entirely unlike motorcycling. The moment these two entities devolve into "dare devils cheating death" I become nauseated and disinterested.
I was puzzled by the "new release" of an older movie like Free Solo until it became painfully clear what they were doing. They merely released Free Solo as hype for their new "Dare Devil Show".
Frankly, this building climb stunt somewhat prostituted Alex's previous climbs and reputation as much as it struck a new low for Netflix.
If I'm being honest, that episode caused whatever stock I had in Alex and Netflix to drop significantly.
The fact that they broadcasted it "Live" seems extra ghoulish.
Just my unpopular :2cents

To pay bills dude has to make hay while the sun is shining as there’s likely not a great pension in rock climbing being a nonunion trade and all that.

Maybe pull a Tony Hawk and license his name for a video game. Milk it for all it’s worth.

I agree with the above post even though I literally just learned who Alex is yesterday. Much respect for him now as a climber.
I didn't watch the climb but heard of it and it smacked too much of hype and spectacle.
It seems Alex agreed to let himself be used by Netflix for their profit. I only hope he got a nice payday out of it.
