What exactly does google sky do?

point your phone anywhere (I mean anywhere. the floor, the sky, the fucking side of your left ball) and its location data and position sensor tell it what part of the sky (even the sky on the other side of the motherfuckin EARF, yo) you're looking at. it will display the constellations and stars.

A
fucking
mazing.

Before I start modding my phone is there a chance I could completely fuck it up? I'm not that tech savy.

Definitely yes. Rooting it can bork your phone if an official update gets pushed to your phone. If there's no such update coming then rooting is relatively safe depending on the method.
Do not put a ROM on your phone. You can seriously mess up your phone, causing panic and searching xda for clues. Not worth it if you're just using basic functions on your phone.

I've often wondered what galaxy my left testicle is from.

I don't even know what putting a ROM on my phone is.

Don't worry about it - enjoy the apps, and think about things like rooting and flashing it when you run up against the limitations imposed by the carrier.

ROM, flash kernels and themes: still have no clue what this means.

Root access allows you to install, remove and change anything on the phone including flashing a custom OS. Not really needed unless you like to tinker. Root access is also needed to remove unwanted vendor installed bloat-ware or install custom software.

Themes and Wallpapers do not require root admin access. There are lots of free/pay themes available for download. Themes offer different styles/appearance of icons and functionality.

And then there's Widgets. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wNiwiY29tLmxldmVsdXAuYmVhdXRpZnVsd2lkZ2V0cyJd

:laughing

CM = CyanogenMod

It's a custom ROM. Long story short, rooting your phone and putting a new ROM on it is essentially reinstalling the Android OS with different features, some stuff removed or added, etc.

Lots of cool shit there :thumbup

Ant, curious minds would like to know how the Virgin Mobile data network performs.

Any SpeedTest results yet?

Play Store

search apps for SpeedTest

install it.

Run it.

tell us what the results are.

Download 60 kpbs, upload 76 kbps, ping 813 ms

Is that good?

no. You may want to try it again with a server that's closer (usually the app picks the closest one). a ping of 813ms is a bit much...might have had a bad test run? Maybe run around outside in circles while the test is running :D.

according to this review:
Keeping that in mind, under the very best circumstances, this particular device provided average speeds of 312 kbps down and 215 kbps up -- more like lukewarm than blazing hot.

this one
On Speedtest.net app, the Triumph averaged a download speed of 510.3 Kbps and a dismal 99 Kbps upload speed.

Got 246, 370 and 312 on three other tests. Depends on the server being used??

there's some variation even with the same server. so ~300kbps down sounds about right, which is fine for email and bookface, ok for browsing....you could run into problems with youtube and streaming music
