When you guys get a new handgun, do you always test and adjust the sites first?
After my first time with my Buck Mark yesterday, I asked the range guy about my groupings. (Larry? said I didn't really have any.

) Nearly all of my shots were on the left side of the target -- high, low and just to the left. Had a bunch inside the black and five in the bullseye. He suggested next time I take a seat and rest my pistol on the block and adjust the sites accordingly. I guess I was hoping, just as he said, that my Buck Mark would be perfect right out of the box.
At home, I looked at the NRA pistol shooting basics book. And according to page 90, I did what most beginners do: "rode the recoil" and placed my trigger finger at an angle, which allowed for the muzzle to shift to the left.
Didn't help either that I wasn't really planted square to the target. Once the other guy moved over a spot, I realized I was at an angle to the target and centered and squared myself.
One thing I didn't like: the grease on the tips of the Desert Eagle cartridges were gumming up my new clip loader and causing the cartridges to jam inside the magazines during loading.
I had a blast shooting on my own for the first time. Just wish I knew what I was doing. And it was neat talking with Larry afterwards. He's a rider too. Asked if my Suzuki was an SV 650. (Yes, it is!) He said he's been riding for 42 years now and during that time has owned 78 -- count 'em -- 78 motorcycles. His latest bike, a Harley, he said, has actually slowed him down some.
