PFFFT! :hand Puh-huh-huh-leeeze. THIS is a gun:

A turbine-powered gatling gun that shoots 30mm depleted-uranium ammunition @ 3500 rpm. I just wince when I think of how much all that ammo costs. BZZZZZZZZZZZOW! That'll be $8000, please. According to people here , it's supposed to be mounted on Apaches and A-10s.

It's one of the few guns that puts out thrust - the recoil is so strong and consistent that it slows the airplane down.

That's used on the nose of the A10 Warthog

Holy crap. It's the scariest gun I've ever seen, for sure. I have family in a small town in Wyoming, and I go there often. In this town there's a gang of Christian survivalist weirdos who like to drive around with an ancient .50 cal machine gun mounted on their jeep. Now that I've seen this turbine gun, I imagine that the only hope for anyone hoping to fight the power is to HIDE. Stupid survivalist posers - your jeep will be welded to itself with a quick burst from an Apache.

That 30mm gatling cannon looks a little large to fit on an Apache. A-10, sure, but not Apache. The Apache uses a 30mm cannon that's a little smaller than the VW-sized one posted above:

Hey now, never underestimate a group of determined, hardy young people, fighting the Man, while yelling "Wolverines!"

El doh! Sorry. Thought I'd read that it could be mounted on either somewhere, but I'm sure you're right - the damn thing is almost as big as a helicopter. The Apache's 30mm is nothing to sneeze at, either. I'll leave my post unedited to warn others not to post without thinking first. :teeth

In the picture below, doesn't it look like there's a kid in the cockpit? "What's this button do? Wheee!"

Heh. Red Dawn. Haven't seen that in a long time. My god - that movie is 21 years old! Yikes. That means I'm approximately 1000 years old. I may put it in thhe Netflix queue for shits & giggles.

There are some things in this life, that you will never regret having done.

Rumpofsteelskin,
The A-10 is a one-seater ;)

<edit> Oh yeah, looks like there's a kid's face in the window hahaha

Then obviously the kid is sitting on the pilot's lap! That's a standard safety precaution, isn't it? :teeth

OK, I will now depart for Sears Point* before I get anything else wrong.

* much nicer sounding than Infineon, IMHO.

Isosceles is great if you're doing static shooting, standing in one spot. Once you get into action/combat pistol and there's a need to shoot fast and move fast, well it really points out the weakness of the isosceles. Another point is that I'm going to be shooting my rifles and my shotguns in the Weaver stance, why change up for pistol?

Suarez has a pretty good article on shooting postures: http://www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=5

ScorpioVI and B12Bill,

Thanks! Especially the article. Super-informative.

So I haven't been to the range in a few months and I'm getting the itch again.

My girlfriend and I had a pretty good streak for a couple months attending Reed's 'ladies night'. It sure helped a bit with the cost.

Everyone at Reed's was really cool and helpful.. but, are there any ranges in/around San Jose that are cheap(er) and safe? $50/week for lane rental/box of 45ACP/gun rental was getting expensive.

TargetMasters is cheaper at $7.50/hour, not too sure about the "safe" part though since TM has a reputation for being a suicide mecca.

Another is to shoot with us at the 10th St. range for $5/hour (free targets), but we don't rent guns there.

Honestly, everytime you gotta get gun rentals and buy range ammo, it's going to cost you no matter where you go. You can get sneaky and go to Walmart beforehand and get the Winchester Valu-Paks for $20 for 100 and sneak that in, and just buy a box from the range.

Get your own gun bro, that cuts out another $15/hour. If you get a .22 you can shoot all day at 500 rounds for $15.

As for that 30mm mounting in an apache... Heh, notice that the A-10 has engines mounted externally in a nacelles? Why do you think that is? Maybe cause there was no room in fuselage for them :p That plane was designed around the gun.

I think the gun in that movie is an M61. Its the 20mm gun in just about every fighter. Shoots at a user selectable rate of 4000 or 6000 rounds/min. My dad has told me stories about shooting them... They actually have a spool up time, akin to turbo lag.

The 30mm casings are much much larger than 20mm rounds, due to them being designed for ground attack roles, instead of air-to-air swiss cheese effect. I have dummy rounds of both sitting on my shelf at home, and the 30mm is about 12" tall. The 20mm looks more like an oversized 44mag than it does a rifle round.

Wow, five bucks. I may have to get my own gun, yet!

I *wondered* about that... Is that simply frowned upon, or will they kick you out like at the movie theatre? :laughing

I don't want to step on any toes...

Yeah, that is looking more and more like a good idea. I've been trying out as many guns at Reed's as I can. I still don't know what I'll end up getting. For now I've only got the finances for one do-it-all gun, personal defense and range shooting. With a budget of ~$500.

Ah, hell, I really didn't plan on starting a "what gun" thread, but I really respect your advise...

My father has a Ruger 9mm which he seems to like. Most of their guns seem to be in that price range. The Glock 21 was another gun I really liked after putting 100 rounds through it.

What about buying used?

Maybe a 9mm would be a good balance between ammo cost/range sessions versus personal defense, if I were to have only one gun.

It's free if you make arrangements to shoot with me during non-public hours. I have 24/7 access to the range.

Oh it's definitely frowned upon. But first they gotta catch you. :laughing

The truth is that ranges want you to buy ammo from them for 3 reasons:

A) Profit. Their markup on ammo is sometimes as high as 50%, they make more money selling ammo than they do renting guns or renting range time.

B) Brass. The brass that they collect at the range (that you're not allowed to pick up) gets sold to metal recyclers and reloaders at a pretty good rate. Not only are they getting brass for free from the shooters that bring in their own ammo, they're also getting it free from the ones who just bought the ammo off them. Double-whammy. And they're too lazy to sort through the free brass that we give them for the non-reloadable steel cases or Berdan-primed crap.

C) Safety. They don't want guy blowing up their range guns with improperly loaded ammo that guys bring off the street. Makes perfect sense, but I get the feeling that they're more concerned with A or B than C.

Yea, it sounds like a 9mm is a perfect compromise for you. Strong enough to have defensive purposes, cheap enough that you can "plink" with casually without breaking the bank. 50 rounds can be had for as little as $4.

I can't really comment on the which gun, the only 9mm's I have experience are the Beretta 92s, the H&K USPs, and the Glock 19. All of which I can heartily recommend to anyone.

$500 is a pretty solid budget for a 9mm, especially if you're going to go the used route. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a used gun if a good deal can be had. For one, parts are generally cheap and easy to replace. Who cares if a gun has 20,000 rounds fired through it, buy a new barrel, extractor, recoil spring, firing pin for under $100 and you're good to go. I'll keep an eye out for used 9s on the gunboards for you.

for a 'do it all gun' in 9mm my first recommendations would be the glock 19 and xd9... I own two xd's so that be my inclination but shoot both. CZ-75B's are nice.

:thumbup You know, I just did a little searching to see how much .45 ACP costs in the real world (I'm so used to paying $15/box at the range). First place I went to, Cabella's, has bulk 230 grain FMJ for $74/600. (which is equlivent to $6/box).

Hmm... that's not THAT big of a price difference I guess. Maybe I'll go for something chambered for the 45 ACP. Hmm...

How do you know when it's time to do that? Would you just wait until the thing jams up on you, or would you immediately perform the said upgrade on any used gun?

You know, that was another thing I've been wondering about recently. I'm not sure this is going to come out right, but... what parts are fully replacable on your average gun? I'm guessing only the working parts, otherwise you could just buy parts piece-meal and put together a full gun without "buying a gun".

Dude, you rock. Thanks man.

I was browsing a site earlier, GunsAmerica.com, and there seems to be alot of Glock offerings for ~500, including the Glock 21.
