The "safe area" missions are pretty cut and paste for every rpg shooter like borderlands, destiny and fallout. Go here, kill people, press button, come back. There is a detective element to some of the side missions where you have to look at clues but it sets a point on the map so you don't actually have to figure anything out for yourself.
The dark zone is where I've been spending most of my time but there is something strange with the character leveling that doesn't add up to me. Experience you earn in the safe zone contributes to your level but experience you ear in the dark zone contributes to your dz level. You can have 100 hrs in the dark zone and still be a lvl 5 character. I don't understand why they made them different things.
I was playing almost solo in the DZ until today. I've come across lots of random people and for the most part it has been a "enemy of my enemy is my friend" relationship but I have had a few stab me in the back after clearing an area and take all my loot. It is gratifying to see random people all work together to hunt down a squad of rogue agents without any verbal plan. I did party up (there is matchmaking if you don't have friends playing) in the DZ and we developed a great strategy for the dark zone. Our main mission is to hunt down Rogue agents. We go about our scavenging and hunting down the AI enemies but as soon as a Rogue agent pops up on our radar or someone tries to attack us the team regroups and gets to work. We started paying attention to agent deaths during extraction times and we started defending the extraction zones from campers. Killing the Rogue agents give you the loot they had so we had gear to extract whenever someone else showed up to call in the helicopter.
Being part of a 4 person squad during this kept us all safe when a rogue agent came back for revenge. Live together or die alone. We did come to a stalemate with a squad of rogues that were sniping from the top of a building. We eventually won as they had no access to ammo supplies (this battle took over an hour) and we destroyed them as they were forced to come down for close combat.
All in all, I think this game is going to be a blast if you have friends to play with. Just don't expect people to die from a heads hot like rainbow six or ghost recon. This is an rpg at its core.
