BART Strike Thread

I believe that unions have long since outlived their usefulness.

We should go back to a 7 day work week for 20% of what we earn now, give back any benefits, too. Union are just a socialist idea, like health care for everyone, and public education is another communist idea that ought to be abolished.

The only way corporations can survive is if we allow them to give us the pittance we deserve.

Personal responsibility should extend to all working people. We should all have to negotiate our own contracts, without outside agitation from activist union bosses. That way we will not have such unreasonble expectations.

Let's go back to the good old days when we let the bosses set the terms of employment.

:rofl:thumbdown and...........:twofinger

You guys can bash unions all you want, but talkj to anybody with a job worth having, and odds are they're union, even though union jobs are now something like 10% of the labor market.

Personally, I couldn't do what I do without my wife's SEIU-protected job with the SF public library. And if you think she's too stupid and lazy to get a "real" job let me just say, :twofinger.

40-hour work week? Thank unions
Anti-child labor laws? Thank unions
Workplace safety regs? Thank Unions
An eight hour workday
A five day work week
Paid sick days, vacation days, and holidays
Family and medical leave
Health, life, and disability insurance
A pension
Safe and healthy working conditions
Proper job training

Union, union, union, union union.

Oh, but now we don't need them anymore? Working people's wages are as low as they've been since the 1960s, health benefits are being slashed, and the minimum wage, even at $7.25 an hour, is a joke. If you think that management and capital would let us keep these things, you are a sucker. We'd all be making $1.25 an hour in a second. You think Nike cares if their workers in China barely make enough money to live on and can only dream of buying its shitty sneakers?

Unions may be imperfect but they are the ONLY thing protecting the great mass of workers from hideous exploitation a la China, India, etc. Think about that the next time you say "unions have outlived their usefullness."

Oh, and before somebody jumps into my shit for getting political on this thread, jump on GsxrGirl:

May I respectfully submit that you know about as much about labor relations as Var knows about bedding in brakes?

Thank you. You just saved me from having to type all of that out.

Unions are what killed our auto industry.

I am ok with some unions. BUT... When you have two guys to install a bart car seat?
One to place it. Another to bolt it down.... All just to protect a job? You think its ok to keep this guy on payroll and raise the cost of a bart ticket......

Stupid job + Union = Rate increase.... Thats stupid.....

Unions are what killed our auto industry.

It's such a relief to have a competent economist explain the "failure" of the auto industry in such simple terms.
We still want to know why it took them 60 years to kill it. Maybe they just took their sweet time?

Strange though, when did the unions take over the management and marketing strategy of the major auto makers, must have been just before they killed the industry!

And what do these esteemed economists buy, well they buy stuff at Walmart....and drive a Toyota.

How patriotic is that?

I notice the 2 bikes in your profile aren't American.

They couldnt cut their labor costs... Thats a big reason they went down hill. They also didnt have much flavor in the brands. How many times can you make the same car over and over and still have it sell?

For the record........
I have owned over 65 cars,trucks, motorcycles
Some GM, some Ford.

Now I own two toyotas, subaru, nissan, ferrari, and a bunch of ducati's
Thats want jumps out at me. I do like the new retro z28, But I'll wait to see what happens next year before buying one. I already own a track car so not sure what to do with it. I just know I like it and want one.

I really wish the GTO was still around. Ford and GM could do allot of they brought the cars from other markets into the U.S.

I notice the 2 bikes in your profile aren't American.

I own two cars, both made by socialist union workers, one at the Nummi plant in Fremont, the other at the Ford Motor Co plant in Chicago.
Neither motorcycle was purchased new, by the way. So the profits earned on those were long since past, But the sellers were both American citizens.

Your turn.:laughing

at first i was gonna say something stupid like "fuck union haters,
'
or some such retarded shit like why do you hate america? why do you hate the history of labor? then i thought, nah fuck it, i'll delete that post and say

If you even care what caused GM to have trouble:

GMAC was heavily into real estate funding, so you can guess what happened.
Chrysler has always had difficulty managing to stay afloat, at least since the 80's ,,,when they declared BK11. Of course they have been producing sub standard crap for years now.

No one in the design, R&D or marketing depts management is union by the way.

That's who runs a company into the ground, the people who "run it".

Ford as a matter of fact, is doing just fine.

Whoa...Another sopprano's ending. :thumbup

lets also stop to think you can buy a new gmc off ebay..... lol
Are those chinese knock offs. Cause we all know ebay is the knock off capital of the world. I guess they might be from when gm sold off the old unused factory equipment..... lol

Well I hope you start looking at the labor costs at running a factory and having to pay them anyways even though the factory is at idle. Plus other things.

Fords doing fine? You like to buy some ford stock then?

gabe and motorama got totally free beers if you're ever in my neck of the woods. no this is not an m4m, i'm just sayin'...............:Port
