Big, Bad Treehouse

Indeed.. kids will always remember it.. so will you.

Great stuff Andy :applause

That gate looks better than a lot of gates I've seen! Very nice craftsmanship, Andy!

Nice gate Andy. I should have sick around a bit longer! Btw, the back route is only 5 miles longer but almost 20 min faster

C'mon Andy-you need to keep up.

Two Boys, A Dog, A Deaf Three-Legged Cat and a 50 Year Old Child

With the tree house construction done for the year, my two sons and I decided to go up to the tree house site Labor Day weekend to enjoy the tree house. Saturday morning, I sanded the floor of the tree house itself and blew off the dust. By mid-day, the floor was smooth and comfortable to walk on barefoot.

The kids played in and around the tree house in the afternoon and then we set up cots and sleeping bags for the evening. It was also fun to catch up with a few neighbors who had seen the pile of raw lumber during the week of July 4th and were stunned by what they saw now!

Before dinner, we decided to see if the dog would go up the tree. She scampered up the stairs to the first platform and then hit the brakes when she saw the bridge. It took some coaxing, but she finally ventured out and crossed the gap to the tree house!

We had brought our old, deaf, three-legged cat on this trip, which is always an adventure in and of itself. The cat hates the car ride, but does seem to enjoy excursions in the forest. Given his current decrepitude, he can't run fast enough to get away if something startles him, so the kids like to take him out and let him explore a few times each day. It was inevitable that he too would end up in the tree house.

Of course, there had to be a group photo, minus the 50 year old child:

After dinner, we read, the boys payed for a while and then we marched up the hill to the tree house. It had been a full moon the night before, so we had plenty of moonlight and lay there happily chatting until we fell asleep. I woke later in the night and found the cold, white moonlight beautiful. The other side of the canyon was visible in the moonlight and the scene was magical. I fooled with the camera, but couldn't get an intelligible image without the flash. With one picture to show for it, I went back to sleep.

The next night was a repeat performance, with the only differences being the stories and size of the moon. Monday morning, we took down the bedding and cleared off the tree house deck so I could apply a sealer. I spent the afternoon sealing the deck and staircase with a clear, oil based deck product that gave the wood a golden honey color.

I also added some vertical rope bars just beyond the gate to add a little height to the side rails.

There are also ropes bridging the gap between the upper stair rail and the main deck rail. I had left this gap to accommodate the need for a movable connection between the stairs and the tree platform. The ropes provide adequate security in that spot.

The tree house itself has an appealing color, now that it has a coat of oil.

This coming weekend, I hope to take a last series of photos once the oil is dry and I can walk on the deck again.

I didn't read the whole thread, but please tell me there is a zip line!

I didn't read the whole thread, but please tell me there is a zip line!

The best I can do is tell you there is a zip line on the property.

There is clear line of sight to a gigantic Jeffrey pine and it would make for a jaw dropping zip line, but I'm not going to put one up for two reasons: I wouldn't install something like that on a Jeffery pine and the potential liability inherent in a zip line that high that is unattended much of the time is more than I can stomach.
