I did three days of moto therapy in Big Sur this weekend after reading on the Los Padres N.F. website that Prewitt Ridge has reopened after being closed for the last few years.

We rode Carmel Valley with a detour on Chatagua Rd. on our way south. There's still a lot of green left, but you can tell its days are numbered.

...with an obligatory taco stop in King City

After lunch, we made for Fort Hunter Liggett and rode Nacimiento-Fergusson Road all the way over to Hwy 1. The little 701 is such a blast on that tight, twisty Road!

We took Hwy 1 south to Los Burros Rd. and connected to South Coast Ridge Rd.

...then followed South Coast Ridge north to Prewitt Ridge, our target camp spot for the day. Prewitt Ridge delivered!

The next morning, we retraced our steps out to Hwy 1 and then rode south into Cambria for gas and snacks. From there, we explored amazing roads like Santa Rosa Creek, Cypress Mountain, Klau Mine, etc. eventually making our way past Lake Nacimiento and San Antonio.

We eventually wound up back on Fort Hunter Liggett, following Del Venturi Rd. out to the Los Padres National Forest to find a camp spot. Los Padres was pretty busy, but we found a remote spot.

Still haven't ridden Naciamento Ferguson, sounds like a good excuse to get out of town soon. Looks like a great weekend!

Awesome loop! I haven't done Nacimiento since it reopened and happy to see the Ridge Road south is open again. I've been out to Prewitt Ridge, but never gone south on the Ridge Road past Prewitt to the coast.

Nice! That area of Los Padres is one of my usual areas, and it's super busy in the spring time.

Hwy 1 is still closed though right?

Talking to the ranger a few weeks ago they said they were considering making Prewitt a permit only area, but looks like it's open.

There were definitely folks camping at Prewitt Ridge but we found a quiet spot in the lower area. Los Padres NF out Del Venturi Rd was an absolute shit-show. We had to get "creative" to find a quiet spot. The only permits required for the area is a fire permit. Hwy 1 is still closed north of Nacimiento-Fergusson but you can ride south through to San Simeon.

Thanks so much for the trip report and pics! I didn’t know about some of those roads. What size Mosko side bags are they? How do you like them?

The Big Sur/Carmel Marathon is today and through the weekend. Going to be a crowded house on the coast.

My luggage is the Mosko Reckless 80. That setup works pretty well for the 701--you just have to be mindful about how--and what--you pack. On this trip, I replaced the 22L top bag with an 8L bag since I was packing pretty light and it was only 2 nights.

Regent’s Slide is quite active apparently

Thanks for the great writeup! Makes me wanna jump on the bike right now!! :ride

They build avalanche gallaries in Europe.

Nice! I just drove the Jeep through Fort Hunter Liggget to Hwy 1 and south yesterday. A little heads up that the road may be blocked at Fort Hunter Liggett usually during weekdays for as much as 1.5 hours. There is a lot of drone testing there and they block the road so no- one is in the impact zone. You might have to be patient. I believe they are usually done well before 5pm. I was thinking of going to MC camp this weekend but the race and changing weather in the low 40s at night make me want to do it in a week or two.
