Am thinking about an excursion towards Big Sur and back over two days on a weekend. Perhaps staying overnight near San Miguel or Paso Robles. Here's a route I came up with for starters, including Old Coast Road (thanks to revnort for that idea!) and Nacimiento-Ferguson.

Kinda looks like Old Coast Road is easy dirt... anyone done that? Any other suggestions for routing or places to stay?

Thanks!

Thinking about 35 and 9 on the way down, skipping that part of the coast. How early would I have to do that to miss most of the Saturday traffic?

Looks like a good route. Can't comment on the 35 & 9 question.

Jealous... unfortunately I'm out for this one... Doing a lil bit bigger loop that weekend.

Old Coast road is relativly easy dirt, especially the first 5 miles or so. Then you go downhill and depending on your dirt comfort it can get a bit pucker inducing. Just slow before descending and you'll do fine.

There's more dirt to be ridden if that intrests you. Go to Gorda, maybe get gas and/or lunch then go back about a mile and head inland on unmarked (if memory serves) Los Burros Rd. It's another easy dirt road that runs along the ridge and eventually connects with Nascmiento Ferguson. For some reason Google Maps is showing Gorda as North of Plaskett Camp Ground, which is incorrect, but it does show Los Burros Rd, and you can see Gorda in the satelite view.

Cheers!

Great info, thanks! Sounds like you've been down there a few times. :laughing

Do you think a standard motorcycle with street tires will be OK on Old Coast Road?

That's a tough one to answer as I've never ridden with you, but there isn't a motorcycle made I wouldn't be comfortable riding on either road. Both roads are just that, roads. They do have a few steep spots and some small loose sections as well, but if you've done Doc Wongs class these roads would be easy. if you do the Los Burros road just make sure you keep on the main road and heading generally north once you reach the ridge.

Have fun out there!

That's what I needed to know, thanks! Pretty sure the Weestrom and I can handle it, but wanted to know for the sake of others who may be along. :)

Oooh, just noticed... it's Forest Service land... free camping... :teeth

Do 25 and 198 and cut out a significant chunk of 101.

Kinda looks like Old Coast Road is easy dirt... anyone done that? Any other suggestions for routing or places to stay?

Thanks!

You don't want to stay in San Miguel- nothing there, well except for the Mission and a bar called The Ranch. You're going to have to go to Paso then you can pick up HWY 46 over to HWY 1 and back up the coast.

And if you take Nacimiento Furgeson through Fort Hunter Liggett you need to make sure you have your current insurance card and registration- you will be required to show both or they will not let you through.

That was true the last time I went through there in 2009, but I had heard earlier this year that it's no longer true. When was the last time you got checked? :confused

Are you sure? :)

You don't want to stay in San Miguel- trust me. There are some nicer hotels in Paso Robles and restaurants. You'll be much better off in Paso trust me. From there you can jump on 46 west to HWY 1 and be on your way North.

My friends went through Hunter Liggett last year and were hassled. Fortunately they pulled out their 5 star cards and were let through.

OK thanks, thought you meant there was no hotel in SM! :laughing Any particular recommendations for lodging/food in Paso?

Big Bubba's Bad BBQ on 24th St... There is also a Motel 6 around the corner behind it. Easy on and off 101 to whichever secondary road.
