Big Sur Loop

Photos and Ride Report: 3 of 3

DSC04071.JPG

Then we press on...

DSC04076.JPG

... looking for the Bixby Bridge and Old Coast Road ...

DSC04084.JPG

... but we never saw either!!

DSC04085.JPG

And having gone so far at this point ...

DSC04086.JPG

... we proceed onto Nacimiento Ferguson Road ...

DSC04090.JPG

... and somehow ...

DSC04093.JPG

... everything seems just fine. :teeth

DSC04094.JPG

These pictures ...

DSC04099.JPG

... do not do that road justice. It's got to be among the best roads I've ever ridden!

DSC04100.JPG

Nicki picks up the pace, and starts to leave me in the dust. :laughing

DSC04104.JPG

And now we get to failure #3, at (G) on the map. The Google directions from the original map included this:

37. Continue onto Co Rd G14/Jolon Rd
38. Turn right to merge onto US-101 S

What they didn't say is which direction on G14! Now when I'm on a motorcycle reading step-by-step directions, I'm not also looking at a map. So I went East on G14, not even noticing that it also went North.

Then we got to the intersection of G14 and 101. I dutifully turned right onto 101 South.

Nicki didn't leave the intersection. I stopped and motioned her to follow. She still didn't leave. :laughing

I go back and we talk. She's certain that is not the right way. How about that, she's right. I can only guess that she's feeling as annoyed as I am now, and we go North on 101 to pick up the route over to highway 25.

Then we have point (I). Not really a failure, but an annoyance. Google directions say "Continue onto Co Rd G13/Lyons St." Due to no road markers it was not clear if this meant to "continue" North or East. I stopped to evaluate. Nicki wants to get home with as little darkness as possible, and does not seem to like the notion of stopping... :laughing ... but we talk for a minute and agree (correctly) that East is right.

DSC04110.JPG

Once on 25 we are treated to some awesome views.

DSC04116.JPG

It became less awesome when we got stuck behind a string of Harleys.

DSC04121.JPG

It will be getting dark soon.

We stopped for gas near Gilroy, Point (J). We'll be slabbing it home now. Should we stop for dinner in Oakland? Nicki thinks that may be a good idea, she'll think of a place as we ride and I'll follow her.

Which brings us to point (K) and failure #4. Traffic comes to a dead stop with no end in sight, and we start some serious lane sharing. Nicki is pretty good at it, but we don't do much lane sharing in Solano County. :laughing So I'm slow and careful, and soon she's out of sight. This goes on for a few miles. I clear the wreck that caused it all and speed on, but no Nicki.

Oh well. 680 is my shortest way home and I remember that there are leftovers in the fridge to be eaten, so I give up on dinner with my charming companion and finish the long slab home.

Well, I've never had that much fun while screwing up. Thank you Nicki, Tim and Ed!

Hey Rod - great report and pictures!

It was a pleasure meeting you, Nicki, and Ed and taking you along some of my favorite SC mtn roads together...and yeah, brunch on the beach in Capitola with moto-only parking was pretty awesome...:teeth :thumbup :thumbup

Bummer about not being able to find the dirt roads...I've had the same thing happen even if I've got a good map...sometimes nothing beats firsthand experience :( Glad you guys found Hwy25 - it is an awesome road indeed :ride

Looking forward to riding together in the future...I'm just hoping the rainy season holds off until mid-November so I can get a few more dirt rides in :teeth

/Tim

Hey Rod - great report and pictures!

I stand corrected: those weren't great pictures, they were awesome dude :twofinger Seriously :thumbup

I particularly liked the reflection ones...and yeah, I shoulda finished my orange slice...my bad...:teeth

Tim, the pleasure was mine. It was great to ride with someone who knows the area so well! Riding with you again would be awesome.

Aw shucks, thanks again! By the way your choice for the lunch stop was fantastic.

Great pics Rod!
Oh yeah, gee, that was a Great Ride too!

Seriously that was a most gorgeous route, heck even if it sorta was a 2-day route we squeezed 2 days worth of goodness into one big phat long one, with so much scenic gorgeousness, what's not to love?

My phone pix are pretty paltry compared to yours (you're getting good at the on-the-fly shots, bravo!) but I'mma gonna post em anyway.
Dunno why they are so small, if I did, they would be bigger. For now I'm gonna go with the pint size. In real life...well you just gotta get out and see for yourself. I highly recommend it. :teeth

Morning chill spot by the lake.

Nice you could join us Ed, after you two left there was absolutely nothing to see or do for the next several-oh-so-many hours. You would have been bored to pieces. Honest. ;-)

Tim thanks for showing us around your hills, the lunch spot hit the ... spot.

Now how about those crazy pipes? Dude those are NOT long enough!
That's what I was saying in my helmet, and see him smiling, he thought I was saying how badass those pipes are. Well I kinda was. In a way. That just can't be practical...

Every bike wants to have its own glamour shot by the beach.

Freakin stunning views on HiWay 1 -- is this news to anyone?
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520028.jpg

OK bike wanted another shot but with more water, so I said of course, hold still...
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520024.jpg

The ocean was such a clear deep blue green it made me want to be a seal for a while, to float in that water, soak up the sun, dine on fresh shellfish, have some kelp salad on the side with that yummy miso dressing...mmm...OK back to reality, well it was just plain beautiful. The stuff daydreams are made of.
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520030.jpg

Harleys were everywhere, you could harley get away from em.
ha.

Rocky Creek bridge. Very Bixby-esque.
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520037.jpg

The ascent from Hiway 1 up the hill...dare I say mountain...in any case it is a bold, large hill and the ascent was rather brisk, which made it fun. Thank goodness we had our bikes. Nacimiento-whatnot featured a pretty epic climb up from the seaside up, the road was paved but the edges faded away into gravel, cliff, and mountainside. Nary a car or moto to be seen. The epicness was such that we had to stop and contemplate the epicness...face to face.
Yes, awesomeness was right here.
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520041.jpg

Yes that road looks like a good time.
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520066.jpg

There's some more of it, with a view down to the ocean all sparkly in the late afternoon sun.
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520064.jpg

Fairy dusters, that's what we called em when we were kids, those shaggy stalks were shedding all over the hills and canyons, piles of it were stuck to the jaggedy edge of the road, a few got spit out once or twice. Bike wanted to pose with those things.
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520044.jpg

Then Rod's bike said "me too"!
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520047.jpg

Then mine wanted just one more, looking up the hill...

Love your pics Nicki, and your way with words. :laughing That one you texted to me came through at 1024x764 resolution, but I have no idea what you're supposed to do on the iphone about that. On my Android phone there's a feature where I can upload camera pics to my Google picasaweb account and that seems to work well.

Anyway, your pics are great just as they are. Thanks again for coming along!

EDIT: By the way someone asked me how many miles it was. I just checked -- for me, 498 miles door to door!

a few more...

Well we're not done yet....

Desertscape behind Rod, mountains falling to coast in front. Gotcha covered out here.

Once we got onto the back side of the hills we were in a warm shady canyon and the road followed a streambed down the valley. Parts reminded me of the road that drops into the top (north end) of Lake Berryessa...the shady hillsides, grassy meadow patches, but with the smell of campfires (yum) burning at the campsites. I'm sure that would be nice too.

Bikey standing at attention and giving a patriotic salute. Of sorts. Yes there is a fort at the other end of that road, in fact it cuts right through. These were the fort boys that used to come down to Cal Poly to hit the bars and dance with us chicky-chicks. Those boys! Damn that was a long time ago.
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520072.jpg

Hey I kinda like this one too...which one's better?
Are you groaning? I'm maybe the only one who can see the beauuuutayyyy in this lil bikey. Well at least I think its lookin pretty cute lately.
2011-10-22%252520Big%252520Sur%252520Loop%252520074.jpg

The section north to 101 and King City was pretty too, reminded me of sections of the valley where Vasco Rd goes through, open grasslands studded with oaks, some cattle, some straight roads laying on top of the land just undulating up and down, following the valley's rises and falls. Not much in the way of traffic out there so you can kinda test the throttle a bit, tuck in, and fly along. That bike got some coaxing and was trying real hard and then just touched...just a little taste mind you...the 3rd digit...for a second...just to see if it would work. Not exactly cruising speed on this lil puppy, but if there was a fire, and you had to get away really fast, well...

HiWay 25 was nice too. Hella lotta slow-ass Harleys in that pretty valley. Kinda entertaining in a way, the body positioning is something else, one of those dudes was so spread-eagled I was thinking this poor guy must get a bugs n road debris up his pants... ok never mind. Moving along...

The sun was a setting as we rolled into Gilroy, our last long pink shadows were riding along with us, flashing over rows of lettuce and other juicy green salad type row crops and then ...one last gas up and the serious slab was on. Yes up the 101/880 it was a bit of a battle, that seems to be the way of the traffic-peppered freeway, it simply is so. And is to be expected. And did deliver said challenge. Or two. Not a big lane sharer but duty called and a traffic jamola like that one made it nice to have the option. Can't argue that it doesn't work cuz it does. Practice-time was at hand! Gotta practice.

Although darkness did beat me home by a little, shoooooooooooot, that was so worth it!

Thanks Rod for getting the ball rollin', the party started, and the Big Sur Loop, looped. Nice to meet you Tim and see you again Ed.

Mission accomplished? Yes!

Double awesome pics/story Nicki :thumbup:thumbup

A CalPoly gal...I shoulda known :teeth...Go Mustangs :thumbup

I liked both of your bike+tank shots...very cool!

I think we all need to plan a sequel ride, this time we can stay in Paso or maybe SLO (Avial Hot Springs anyone :teeth) and get someone to help us find the dirt roads....:thumbup

Till next :ride...

/Tim

Yep an overnighter down there would be great! Maybe not too dirt-oriented, but some easy unpaved roads would surely get some interest. We were thinking in terms of a campout like the one we did at Hendy, but it's hard to bring enough stuff for that on motos only. A hotel or something like Avila should work just fine.

Rod, great stuff!

498 miles....impressive.

Couple of questions if you don't mind....

Is Nacimiento clearly marked?

How far south does the Old Coast rode run? From the Bixby Bridge to...?

(I'll google it)

Thanks.

Brad.

Yes there is a Nacimiento sign but watch for it on the left side of the road as you are going down highway 1.

This is the road that we were trying to find. It's 10.1 miles and comes out 8.4 miles further down on 1.

EDIT: According to Google, here's what you'll see as you approach. There is no Bixby Bridge sign and no sign naming the road, but note the yellow diamond sign indicating a side road coming up.

Yep, that was it on the left. The yellow sign there at the fork on the left, it said the road was "impassable in wet weather". Def unpaved. Could be interesting!!

Rod, you could've always come over to my house for dinner! :)

:party

Hey we should do an Oakland/Berkeley dinner gathering sometime soon. So many GREAT restaurants around there. Patty A has started working in that area too. I love my Barfettes! :teeth

Rod -

Thanks, I actually did the ride today.

santa cruz mountains, hwy 1, old coast road, hwy 1, nacimento-ferguson, hwy 101 home.

No time to do 25.

Great day, but dang, it got cold at the end.

Brad, sounds great! Nice to avoid the weekend traffic I'll bet. How was Old Coast Road, any pics? :)

Yeah, getting into the low 40's at night now... wasn't that cold when we did it Saturday.

^^^no pics, I'm pretty bad at taking pics, I just ride and ride.

OCR is super pretty, two steel bridges are really cool. Great views.

Only 10 miles though, wish it was longer. I'm also curious about the South Coast Road (I think that's what it was called) - that intersected with N-F Road. I took that about 1 mile and then turned around.

Rod & Nicki, did this trip become a day trip, instead of a two day trip? I would have joined you guys if I knew that it was just going to be an all day trip. Maybe next time again...I just can't seem to do overnighters. Nice

Yep, day trip, as explained in my post-ride report. You should post up a group ride and do one of those!

As for me, think I'd rather do an overnighter next time like Tim suggested. :)

We should all (Misfits) do this ride to Hwy 1 south, even just out to Castroville & eat at that bbq/steak house in C'ville. I think it's called Big Texan BBQ, or something like that.
