It is made to detach easily with any impact. No mechanical attachment other than it clips in to a plastic mount.
 
There are several modes so you can select the level/ type of illumination. I have certainly noticed a decrease in tailgaters over the 3 years I have been using this product. Now comes in black and white and an improved version was just released. I love mine and have mounts for both my helmets so I can swap the unit in seconds. Also, charge lasts forever (a couple of days at least). Highly recommend and for around $150, a no brainer.
