Buy Gpro now!

I think it's quite honking obvious that if you go on like a forum and announced when is a good time to buy then you have to announce when is a good time to sell otherwise it's quite obvious you'll be called a shill

Nothing to worry about, I doubt anyone acted on that recomendation

Ha. When this thread came out I considered shorting them. Sure wish I had. I bought Sprint instead at 3.22 a share instead and am satisfied with how its done. Im holding out for 8.

What can that have in their oven that is so amazing to rebuild their valuation? An incrementally better black will not do.

My thoughts exactly.

GoPro has a couple things going for it:

  • They have a perfect advertising tool (their users)
  • and they have brand. The "EW! It's not a GoPro!?" factor is huge.

For those reasons I will not invest. GoPro has nothing else. Tech-wise, they don't do anything another company couldn't step up and do easily. Think about it... could another company produce a rugged 4k sport camera? The answer to that question is yes and it has been done. If GoPro failed tomorrow, except for a lot of people being out of a job and a lot of people losing a bunch of money - nothing would change. When a company is THAT easily replaceable I just don't see them being worth investment.

They're like iPhones in that people are into them and incremental upgrades are sufficient. Plus, when you sell the old and buy the new, it's not *that* much $ to have the latest and greatest. I wouldn't invest in anything that relies on discretionary income right now, but I do think that GoPro is an okay long term investment, though there are certainly better.

Do people really upgrade their GoPro that much?

I have no idea what the actual stats are of buyers & gaps in time between upgrades, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who buy each new model. Let's say there's a new one every year and you lose $150 between selling old and buying new, that's like 41 cents per day, which is nothing to someone who rides/races a lot and is into recording it.

Problem is, lots of other companies are catching up and technology is easy to slightly edge out. Reason why they are sit in athletes and branding themselves as an image/lifestyle. Not just a versatile camera. Next step is to get media and editing suites, like adobe has for graphic design.

Entopic, I think we can categorically say, based on historical data, that your buy call was not good advice. In the one month that followed, the max potential upside was around 10%, and in approximately 14 of those days, the stock was flat or down from it's price on 10/15/14. At no point past 11/15/14 was the stock ever above the price you recommended and if held until now you would've lost half your money. I think it's extremely unlikely you made ANY money on GPRO.

At this point GPRO is at IPO price, and I don't see it recovering. I think it was pretty clear in retrospect that if anyone did manage to make money on GPRO, it was mostly because of clueless retail investors piling into it behind you. I believe that I and Reli (?) called this outcome during a thread pre-IPO. It was pretty clear all along, their total addressable market is just not that large, they claimed a media/content play but they have competitive disadvantages to youtube and they will not be able to profitably monetize with their own ads, and they lack a competitive moat around their business nor is it particularly obvious that customers would be willing to upgrade recurrently.

Netflix is going to go huge imo. They are not only delivering a service but they are creating and controlling content. I truly believe they will be the next generation of what we know as Comcast.

Netflix now. Podcasts in 10 years.

Fuckit, Amazon has taken a huge beating over the last 12 months, but they're ALWAYS in the news. I still have some faith in Bezos. Bought in today. Fingers crossed.

Posted 10.24.2014 Stock price $287
