Buying Software on Craigslist. Malware?

I'm going go ahead and point out the obvious here: If you just buy the software from a legitimate source you'll not have to worry.

I like a challenge. Software is $200. Figure I'll try my options before throwing down the coin.

So you're cool with buying stolen property?

Whatever works for you, I guess. I can't wait for the "I got scammed" thread. :twofinger

Oh, and the .edu version of that software can be had for ~$100

EDU version is limited in some way, I'll check it out. There's other screenwriting software for under $50 with nearly the same feature. Final Draft is the standard with lots of features and ability to write on multiple platforms.

I would hope that adobe is, at this point, sophisticated enough to break the shit out of their software once it detects that the registration key is compromised and being used for piracy activities. You might be able to find a torrent version that's had the registration module ripped out, but it won't be update-able, will probably be glitchy in strange ways, and almost certainly has malware on it that will make your computer part of a botnet, a click farm, or will simply try to steal your identity.

The only way you can really do it these days, is if you buy the software with a friend. The registration system probably has some leniency built in, so it won't hose your software if it only detects a couple installations. maybe.

You can block Adobe software from contacting the servers. You just lose the ability to get the latest bug fixes. Some people are okay with that.

Damn, that's some smart shopping Dubs !

By the way, I'm selling a "free gas replenishment kit" if you're interested. Once you invest in my kit you'll never have to buy gas again ! Guaranteed to work :thumbup

So, your making a movie and $200 is a concern for a tool that a good text editor should cover.

I wish! My 9-5 is in education. I took screenwriting in college and want to get back into it, dust off a movie I wrote and maybe get my pilot read. Start working on a few of the dozen ideas I have stored in my phone too.

I can get an educators discount on Final Draft or Movie Magic 6, $129 each, better than $200. I'll look into it more tonight.

yep. my boss was on my comp yesterday and asked "did you edit your hosts file?" :| he was shocked it was that ez to pull one over Adobe. :laughing

To the OP: Aren't you a school counselor to children? Do you advise the students to cheat, also?

This is disgusting behavior for a person in education, and especially one who counsels children.

How do you spell your last name?

Lex

Keep driving the speed limit you "arrogant bastard" :x

:laughing

Because speeding and IP theft are exactly the same thing. :rolleyes

please please with the pathetic eye rolls. You've never downloaded a song online before? Riiiiight.

I've got a mother already. Respond to the original question or bounce and pretend you're Mr. Moral in another thread.

problem with used software is that it can be a bad chinese knockoff copy that will not register or activate with the code key when used, or that the code key is already registered to another PC and is not transferrable.

Plenty of offices used to buy multiple physical copies of the same software and use the keys between machines with only one set of install media. the boxes stay shrink wrapped and never opened. Some enterprising employee, visitor or janitor grabs one thinking to make a quick buck, and it's totally worthless.

There is a school of thought that if you use pirated software, that you do not use it for financial gain.

So in the case of the OP, if you are going to "acquire" Final Draft, just don't use it to sell your scripts. Pay for the software. What's a $130 if you sell your script for even $500 to "The Asylum" to make Sharknado 3: Third Times A Charm.
