A funky red & white Italian named Gianni Cervo! Versys - two of 'em! And a Ducati for laughs.

This story starts a long time back. 2006 to be exact. That year I overcame my fears and sloth to go enter the Centopassi. If you don't know that name, it's an event that Ducati used to sponsor to highlight the wide ranging capability of the then new aircooled Multistrada. In 2006 it was a four day event that began in Nice, then moved to Bardonecchia . It was a time/speed/distance rally with special tests at the beginning and end of each stage.

It just so happened, that much to my surprise, I was the only Yank riding in the competition class that year, but fortunately I was adopted by a team from the UK, pictured below.

On the right is the captain, Colin Barlow. Colin is the best and most accomplished street rider I've ever known, and passed from cancer in 2011. In the middle is Dave Robinson, and on the left is Dominic Gill. Dom and I have remained close. We frequently ride together over there, and he keeps my UK bike in his shop in Yorkshire.

I made a lot of friends on that event, not all of whom are pictured. One of whom is Peter Hennissen from the Netherlands. Peter (now retired), sold motorcycles for many years, and he also was a guide with a Dutch motorcycle touring company.

The reason for posting all of this is that after years of me badgering them, they finally came over this way to ride! :ride

I was very excited about getting them over here, and obsessed about routes. When we planned the trip last year, my biggest concern was getting them here before fire season begins in earnest. Of course, I didn't anticipate the winter and spring we had this year. :dunno

Out of the blue, my friends chipped in. My closest non-riding friends, Chris & Gail offered up their granny flat for my friends to use, making the critical error of showing Dom how to find the wine cellar. :Port

Good times beckon. :teeth

But it wasn't just housing. I offered Dom the use of my Versys, but Peter was not crazy about using my Enfield, when out of the blue, Gwynne offered up the use of her NC! Thank you, Gwynne!

Thanks, Jeff!

Due to jet lag, they were up bright and early on day1. Our plan on day 2 was to join the PitHo rally, so on this day I wanted to get a chance to get them settled in and accustomed to their rides. With that in mind, we rode up to Berryessa, then over to Pope, then up Howell Mountain to visit my cousin's place where Peter took some pics.

One thing (at least) I should explain, one of the gifts of riding with these guys is that I know what they can do. They can ride all day, day after day, on some of the most technically challenging paved roads there, so I knew we could spend ten days hitting it hard. :party

Day 1, part 1

Day 1, part 2

A couple of things became clear. First, Peter was not getting on with the TKC80's. Second, every day Dom would ask, "Tell me again why you come to England to ride?" :laughing

During lunch at Perry's, I called Santa Clara Cycle Accessories to see if they could mount a set of tires first thing Friday morning. When they said yes, it was just a matter of selecting the tires.

Big :thumbup for SCCA!

It was nice to meet the guys. My only regret was not hoisting a pint with you guys.

Day 2

We knew we couldn't get tires and be on time for the rally start, I advised Bud we'd be late. After, slabbing it down to SCCA from Orinda, we arrived just as they opened at 9 AM, and they got the bike straight in. We wandered over to the nearby *$'s, and prepared to savor our coffee slowly. Our plans were ever so rudely interrupted by the message that the bike was ready. :wow We were out of there in about 40 minutes. :party

Next stop had to be PIE! We headed over to Uvas to pick up the route of the classic pie ride, followed by Hecker Pass and pie (yes, that's Mr. Gray hisownself in the photo).

From pie, we wandered out to 1 before heading back inland to catch Laureles Grade to Carmel Valley, then out Carmel Valley Road to Cachagua, only disrupted by my customary crap navigation, putting us on Tassajara. Oops! Photo op!

Once we got back on Carmel Valley Road, we made our way to 101 for a ton of splitting before turning off for Lockwood, connecting with G14 (classified!) past Lake Nacimiento to connect with some of those lovely roads west of Paso (Adelaida, etc.), continuing to Atascadero to pick up 41 to Morro Bay.

Check in was a little confusing because I thought the bill the guy gave me for just my room was really for all 3 rooms. Nope, just 3x the cost I would have expected. We made up for it by going to the local taco place and seizing the means of Jamaica production.

Day 3

This was always going to be a challenging day. My original plan included a bunch of roads that were marked as closed (Tepusquet, Camino Cielo, Gibraltar, 33). Of those, I think I was most disappointed about Tepusquet. Since we couldn't do the giant loop I had planned, we had to improvise. I decided to skip going east (58), and go see if Tepusquet was really closed. :devil

First destination, Rossi's Driveway, which got a big "Hell, yeah!" from the lads, then I thought it would be fun to show them an authentic American saloon, so it was off to Pozo, only to find that the saloon is very closed (padlocks, barricades, and so on). Disappointed, we headed for SLO to make a Cycle Gear stop for some replacement shoulder armor for Dom's jacket. While there, I asked if the reports I'd heard that Prefumo Canyon was closed. They responded that a guy had been in the store the day before who had ridden it to the top, but stopped at the end of the pavement. This called for exploration. :ride

Prefumo and See were open, and they were their usual laugh riot selves, and we even found CDONA out there on his scrambler. Next stop was the south end of Tepusquet. I decided to approach it from the south because if it was blocked, we would just turn around and ride back down to Foxen Canyon. This involved a fair amount of slab from just south of SLO all the way to the far end of Santa Maria where we stopped for gas. At the gas stop, I pointed out that we had ridden past Pismo Beach where the climatic scene from On Any Sunday had been filmed, only to get blank looks from everyone but Steve who already knew that. None of them, including another American rider, had ever seen it. I are sad. :(

Next stop was the south end of Tepusquet to answer the open or not question. Well, the sign said closed, but in the immortal words of Woody Guthrie, "the other side didn't say nuthin'". We rode it nearly to 166 before turning around and riding it back, then stopping for a roadside lunch.

From here we rode back to Foxen Canyon, then headed east until we got to Aliso Canyon (short but excellent road surface and fun to ride) to take us back to 101 for the long slog back to Santa Margarita so that we could take another shot at Rossi's.

We all needed a break in Santa Margarita, so Peter and I contemplated the meaning of retirement. ;)

After that, back up Rossi's, and 41 back to the motel, where my usual crap navigation skills had us riding around in circles near the motel.

Day 4

The original plan for this day would have been to ride up 25, then cross the valley towards Mariposa. The problem was that the chain on my Versys began to stretch quite a bit on this trip. So, I decided that I wanted to replace chain and sprockets, even though neither were very old, and the spockets looked okay. It seemed to be the easiest place to do that would be my driveway, since most shops aren't open Sunday or Monday. Thus, the plan became to return to the BA on Sunday.

Our route would be Indian Valley, Peachtree (past the road closed sign), then 25 up to my usual diversion to Cienega, and stopped at the usual places.

Peter wondering where the fuck I've taken him.

I called the CG in Gilroy to see if they had a chain and sprocket kit in stock. They had the chain, but not the sprockets, so we took what they had and headed north. 101 from Gilroy northwards was its usual Sunday afternoon clusterfuck with aggro drivers mixed in with those barely conscious. I got us off the freeway at Metcalf and went up into the hills. We managed to stay off the slab until we were north of Sunol. This involved surface streets in SJ, climbing up to Sierra for the view before heading to Felter and Calaveras, again eliciting questions about why I go to England to ride.

Day 5

This day started in my driveway, with Dom and I performing a chainectomy as Peter supervised. After committing an unforced error, we sorted things out and got on the road in the late morning.

Since my original concept of the ride was to be a counterclockwise oval of California, with riding the rally would be the southernmost, followed by crossing the valley to ride the foothills, disappointed that many roads would be closed, continuing up as far as Lassen before heading west. Well, that was the plan. Since we had diverted back to the BA, I decided we should go up the coast instead.

Before we pulled out, I called the Mendocino Hotel to book their Euro Rooms (no en-suite bath), and we headed off. If we hadn't had to start late, I was thinking to start us out riding Panoramic/Pan-Toll/Ridgecrest/BoFax, but now we'd have to skip that for the time being. We shot up 101 to San Antonio to get to Marshall-Petaluma, then 1 to Valley Ford for lunch.

After lunch I explained my aversion to Bodega Bay, so we headed over to Occidental, and then up to Coleman Valley for their approach to the Pacific, and of course, Goat Rock Park.

I'm not sure. I think he just might be enjoying himself.

We climbed up to Tin Barn, then made our way down to Stewart's Point to get back to work on 1. And it was a little bit of work. The evening commute was happening, and there were some dawdlers, however once we got north of Point Arena the road cleared out. Can't say the same for the visibility as the fog rolled in and the temps dropped. Riding 1, without much impediment, as the evening gloom gathered was kind of magical. I'm not sure what the guys expected from California, but I'm thinking temps lower than back home, and fog might not have been it. I reminded them of Mark Twain's comment about the coldest winter he ever spent. :teeth

Mendocino was very quiet on a foggy Monday night. We got all checked, had a bit of a walk, were serenaded by frogs, a good dinner, then off to bed in anticipation of the next day's riding.

A couple of notes. First, many of these photos were taken by Dom, some by Peter. Second, when Peter realized that we were in Mendocino, all his childhood memories of hippie-influenced bubblegum pop came roaring back. Yes, I'm here to share the earworm. :laughing

Day 6

After having brekkers in Mendo, we saddled up and sallied forth into the fog, and not just any fog, but fog that required me to squeegee my visor every couple of minutes. We needed fuel, so we were headed for Fort Bragg. My thought had been to continue up 1 to Leggett, but the fog was thick and the air was cold, and Hwy 20 to Willits beckoned. Normally, I avoid this road due to traffic, but on Tuesday it was lightly trafficked, and most drivers pulled over for us. :ride

Sunny and warm in Willits, we continued to Laytonville to descend Branscombe to the coast, then up 1 to Leggett.

My favorite section of all of 1 is that chunk from the coast to Leggett, but the surface continues to deteriorate, leaving lots of gravel on the road. I polled them over lunch at the Peg House regarding which of the three east-west roads we'd just ridden (20, Branscombe, 1) they liked best, Branscombe was the winner. Maybe it's time to go ride it again. :ride

Of course, they had to see Avenue of the Giants cause there sure is nothing like it in Blighty or Holland.

The day was stretching out, and we had reservations at the Gold Country Inn in Weaverville, so it was time to get a move on. Not many photos here because we were focused on getting going. First, it was east on 36 to Wildwood. I think the only stop we made was at the summit of South Fork Mountain. Then it was up Wildwood to 3 to 299. The guys LOVED 36, but the descent from Hayfork Pass on 3 really lit them up. :party

Once ensconced in Weaverville, the only thing left to do was introduce them to the joys of gas station Mexican food and gas station ice cream cones. They were skeptical, then converted.:teeth

They both pronounced this day the best day yet.
