Cars: 2005 Mustang GT vs. Corvette

If she's dead set on getting an American made sports car, why not buy something that you don't see very often. Get one of these:

Yeah, get this American Porsche knock-off. Get some Miller Lite, too.

Another vote for the 2005 gto , 6spd, ls2 engine = 400 hp and 400 lb-ft torque . Have you driven one yet ? :teeth

Wasn't one of your options, but what about this: http://www.pontiac.com/gto/ ?

At the very least, it has the vette motor, seats 4, and GM is having its employee pricing for everyone promo. Just a thought.

Gonna drive one tonight, if all goes well. :thumbup

sweeeeet . Also , that employee pricing looks pretty good , but with the lackluster sales the gto is having , you should be able to get an even better deal . I've seen new 2004's for $25K , you should be able to get close to that figure on the '05 .

The GTO got it's ass handed to it by the 05' Gt stang, from the guys at C&D. Nice car, but the Vette is a real good choice. Hydroformed frame, ass busting performance...there's really nothing that will beat a Vette for the price point, performance and features being equal. Are you getting a new one Dave? If not...You'd be suprised the wholesale numbers on 2002 Z06's...one of the most dominant track cars around.

Not to mention the vette has something the Stang doesn't have that's the coolest advance in autos since trac control, and it's even cooler than trac control: Stability control. Stability control is GREAT especially in high HP cars in the rain. I've tried to swap ends, push the nose through a turn and generally get a car so out of shape it won't come back. No deal. With ESP, it's all elementary.

THAT alone is reason enough for the vette.

Hey guys,

When muscle cars were around in the 60's, were they as expensive as they are today? Seems like today, we pay freaking top dollar for a car with 300hp ... Like 4x as much as a regular family car. Was this the case?

You may answer in 3rd person to preserve your identity and/or conceal your true age.

You mean in this comparo?

Using C&D's point system, the Mustang won by 1 point overall. :confused Ok, so maybe the Mustang handed the GTO a couple of ass-hairs. Drive both....see which one feels, drives, and looks better to you.

Another interesting review here:

Too bad they timed the GTO in the wet and used an 04.

All said and done, personally, if I went the American car route, I'd go for one of the specialties like the GT500 or S281E.

drizz, lets be honest....everyone has their own opinions, but in the end, she'll be driving it....take her to ford then chevy, test drive each...she should be able to find out which she likes better.

The GT is selling for about 40K from what I have heard. Stil not as expensive as the Vette but a far cry from 24K..

Ok, time out time out time out.

I don't know where you're getting your mis-information, but I bought my 05 GT, ordered in September 04, delivered in February 05. Sticker price: 29.2k (24.9k base plus options), price I paid: 26.4k+TT&L.

Paying a penny over MSRP is unreasonable, period. This is just a Mustang GT, not an SVT vehicle or any sort of special edition. I literally laughed at my local dealer when I saw the $3K markup on the GT I wanted to buy (they were asking 32K).

Now then, as far as Stang v. Vette... it depends on what you want out of the car. Since it is for your girl, and it won't ever be beaten on hard, it doesn't really matter which vehicle she ends up with re: performance. BOTH vehicles will be more than enough from stoplight to stoplight.

The bottom line is going to be whatever she decides she'll enjoy driving on a daily basis, but since she *is* a financial advisor, I would seriously take into consideration the $20K plus difference in price, especially since a home purchase is in in the future.

Oh yeah, and Vette drivers are elitist snobs who never drive their cars the way they are meant to be driven. </sarcasm>

My 150 mph+ speeding ticket and mandatory court appearance begs to differ. :cry :cry :cry I am soooo fucked!

I did think that the GT's were being sold for around 40K because of the high demand. Maybe that included tax and lic. etc. I still drool over the black GT coupes!

I think there might have been a few asshats on ebay selling "the rights to buy a Mustang GT" which included the 25K MSRP, plus however much, and the auctions got over 40K. I remember somethign like that happened with the GTO as well.

General markup was between 3-5k at most dealers around here, but still, that can make a 32K+ Mustang GT, which is absurd.

I would just like to point out that at the autocrosses which I frequent, corvettes are by far the most common car. The only real challenger to them (in terms of numbers) are miatas. That says something about what kind of a car they are.

On the other hand, a friend of mine had one of the early production GTs for a few days last summer. We took it autocrossing, and it was a horrible, horrible, horrible car. Don't kid yourself that this "sportscar" was designed for much else besides accelerating hard onto freeways.

And I'd bet the people who love the Saleens on here are the same people who laugh at hondas with aftermarket turbochargers and fart can exhausts. I've spent some time around them at an autocross, and they didn't exactly impress me enough to overlook the $50,000 price tag. Its still just a souped up Mustang, except that it comes with a warranty.

And I would like to lay out that I have very strong car opinions, and I know I'm a dick about them. So flame away :)

COme on, you think I would let BARF make the call? :laughing That's what it will come down to in the end, but I wanted to know if anyone had personal experience in the matter that would help me know what to look for or take into consideration. I got that :p

If you just take the time to just SIT in them, one is built like poo and the other has the best finish in a GM car.

I am not directing this at you, this is a generic 'you'. I agree with your point on the GTO, Holeshot has a tendency to claim that in C&D the mustang is the clear distant winner, which is hardly the case.

And I restate my take on the Mustang being poo(h)rly finished.

That's about it, carry on.

Hugo

I read it as a clear winner Hugo...not like I care that much. The new mustang isn't my cup-0-tea...
