CHP Lane Splitting Tips issued

I was surprised when they removed it.

It took 18 months basically to write these and earlier versions had a delta and suggested max speed.

In ways I was glad that they removed the max speed because I feared having a legislator grab onto them and propose a modification to AB51.

The high-beams part is interesting, since I thought using high-beams during the day is a ticketable offense but generally not enforced.
It is recommended practice. See DMV's California Motorcycle Handbook (PDF), page 27:
Using your high beam during the day and at night increases the chances that oncoming drivers will see you. Use your high beam when it is legal and safe to do so.

Howzabout someone who is more savy them me post or link the .jpg version so I can post this.

Now I have to go review when it's legal. Something about so many feet from other vehicles...which would be almost never in general around here, and never if you're splitting...if that is the case.

The distance restriction is only applicable in the dark. It’s perfectly legal to use highbeams during daylight.

Nice. Also pleased to see it addresses both riders and cagers.

Things that stood out for me:
- split up to speed limit, ok, that makes things real clear, leaves me plenty of headroom.
- anything reckless is ticketable regardless of speed limit.
- use high beams during the day.

The high-beams part is interesting, since I thought that was a ticket.

I use clearwaters at their lowest brightness, guess I can turn them up a smidge...

24409

Whenever a motor vehicle is being operated during darkness, the driver shall use a distribution of light, or composite beam, directed high enough and of sufficient intensity to reveal persons and vehicles at a safe distance in advance of the vehicle, subject to the following requirements and limitations:

(a) Whenever the driver of a vehicle approaches an oncoming vehicle within 500 feet, he shall use a distribution of light or composite beam so aimed that the glaring rays are not projected into the eyes of the oncoming driver.

The lowermost distribution of light specified in this article shall be deemed to avoid glare at all times regardless of road contour.

(b) Whenever the driver of a vehicle follows another vehicle within 300 feet to the rear, he shall use the lowermost distribution of light specified in this article.
(Amended by Stats. 1965, Ch. 37.)

We had a barfer get a ticket for using high-beams in the daytime (see below). I cannot find anything in the CVC that allows one to use their high beams while splitting, whether during the day or night. Perhaps someone else can find such information.

Apparently, (not surprising) DMV may not be the best source for legal information.

And as explained in the first post of that thread, the ticket was thrown out.

As for splitting with highbeams, it's illegal in darkness as per 24409. Legal in daylight (similar to lanesharing, it's legal because it isn't illegal).

City Bike story

Love how they never pull punches. Straight up stuff.

I agree with the author at City Bike: the guidelines, while nice to have, are pretty mild. I prefer the BARF splitting guidelines.

Also, someone mentioned that the 50mph delta guys need to read this. I'm not sure they can read well, and if they can, I'm certain that the guidelines would have zero effect on their behavior.

was splitting with a CHP moto today doing 50ish in stop and go traffic

I was splitting slightly faster before the stop in go, he rolled up behind me and passed me up.

I don't think CHP really cares about lane splitting as long as your not doing 100 plus smashing mirrors on one wheel.

It's a start. And CA is the model state for this moving forward. Hopefully, more states will adopt lanesplitting as time goes on.

Yay!

We should bring a cake to the next CHP meeting.:ride:party:party

Thank you for making the situation perfectly clear. :thumbup
