Crossing double yellow, on HWY 1

It was a straight... a straight where the DYL passer was just coming over a rise, headed downhill toward an often very busy area (Tomales Bay Oyster Co.). Not a great place for a pass like that imo.

As for the wave, I see it as a mixture of apology and confidence. As if to tell the surprised oncoming motorist "hey, sorry you're freaked out right now, but relax - I got this".

Passing two vehicles over the top of a blind hill is not the best strategy. If he found a Corvette or another low slung and hard to see car coming the opposite direction at speed then two cyclist in front of the two cars he or she would have had to make some very fast decisions.

Like plow into the front of it head on? YammieNoob, anyone? :afm199 lol

...As for the BARF Nanny Brigade, it was a straight, so not an unreasonable place to pass. Should the rider have done it quicker and used counter steering to return to his side of road faster, yes. The main fault I saw was a slow and sloppy pass.

:rofl Not unreasonable at all, except for the crest of the hill that prevented the kook from seeing any oncoming traffic.

Nope, sorry... you can't fix stupid by countersteering.

Yeah I don't see any issues with passing going up hill either.

When people see motorcycles cross double yellows somehow their perception of motorcyclists doesn't change?

There are lots of cars these days that can accelerate on par with a lot of bikes, its not okay for them to cross over because they take up more of the lane? Every time a motorcyclists crosses over the double yellow the car driver being passed only sees another biker breaking the law.

JMHO

I don't use double yellows as a measure of whether it is or is not safe to pass.

I use sight lines to measure if it is or is not safe to pass. I try to use the most conservative estimation. For example, I assume that as soon as I pull out to pass there will be an oncoming truck traveling 100 mph that just appeared at the vanishing point. So, I won't pull out to pass unless I'm confident that I can make a safe clean pass within that timeframe. If I am leading a group I will mention to pass only when comfortable, do not assume because it is safe for me to pass it is safe for someone behind me. If I am leading a newbie I will only pass when I feel they have enough time, but I still tell them to only pass when they know they can make it safely. Lastly, I strongly recommend against signaling to other riders behind you if it is safe to pass. Let them make the judgment call.

Again, not a fan of the timing/place of the pass. But to be fair, I'd wager the passer had the proper sight line prior to overtaking the cars. Doubt he started the pass blind before the rise... likely saw the oncoming moto and assumed OP would recognize there was plenty of room for both bikes.

At :10 you can just see his helmet popping up over the horizon: he was already in the oncoming lane as he crested the hill.

I would never assume someone has my best interest at heart.

Hmmm. I am pretty sure that TTTom was being sarcastic.

The trouble is that California has turned virtually every road into a Double Yellow. We have covered this on a couple of occasions. Places that use to have passing zone and that use to be fine for all vehicles are now unsafe? That doesn't make sense to me, since vehicles are faster and safer.

I pay little attention to the lines. I almost never have, because my depth perception and speed judgement are good. You should understand the issues from your other thread. Most drivers understand that motorcycles are faster and smaller because that is pretty obvious. What they don't understand is close calls, loud pipes and show-offs. Avoid those things and crossing the DY will only bother those who will be bothered anyway. :)

Oh yes, and the passer was an idiot. I would have been pissed if I was the O.P..

This has happened to me more than once and I just waved, plenty of room but the rider should have returned to his lane as quickly as possible. Since the state has gone DY crazy there is virtually nowhere legal to pass on most of these two lane roads despite vast stretches of safe passing areas. Add in the bicyclists creating a rolling road block so that cars can't pass then I can understand the frustration being stuck behind it for a couple of miles at 25mph.

lol I was too. :laughing

Passing before a hill crest is a great way to hit people head on.

Ah, okay. Well, I feel better that we are whittling down the number of people that think the pass was alright. Your ironioscasapy is rather hidden. I will keep that in mind the next time you bring up something relevant, like under armor colors.

Covered this many times; fed required states double-yellow everything (for safety) or lose fed highway funds. Once again Gov't protecting us from ourselves, where we don't need protecting. If I know a section once was a broken yellow w/safety, I have no problem passing over the DY there IF it's clear.

Too bad a ticket there is unfightable on the grounds of gov't funding... :thumbdown

I'm surprised... well, not surprised, but rather troubled or perhaps disgusted, or both, by the justification of the other rider's behavior. To be clear, I'm not talking about passing on the double yellow—the effects of that are a different discussion. Nor am I talking about the circumstances of the pass—uphill, or whatever.

The kind of "thinking" that says it's ok to pass in the same lane as an oncoming vehicle, whether that vehicle is a car, motorcycle, or even bicycle, is why society hates us, and why we keep killing ourselves.

That was a fucking stupid pass, plain and simple. If I was the OP, I'd have had words with the other rider, at minimum.

I am not sure is hwy 1 is funded by the FEDs. SR1 is the designation so it is a state route. of course I'm speculating here..

You know, at times it feels like some drivers see "skinny" vehicles like bicycles, motorbikes, Miatas, etc, and calculate that skinny vehicles have room to give, and gun for a dicey overtake. Troubling.

Not to mention taking one hand off the bars for a silly social gesture, with bicycles on one side and oncoming traffic on another.

Young, dumb and full of cum.
