Dark visors and riding at night

Just don't forget, having an internal visor in your helmet, you are taking room away from the padding which protects your head from a very bad impact.

Gooing to get a photochromic lens sounds like the best bet for my situation.

Cycle Gear sells a shield sleeve. It has a strap so you can wear it around your waist if you so desire.
I've always worn sunglasses in my helmet, and remove them at night.
Right now, my Bell helmet has a transition face shield on it. I love the versatility, although it never gets as dark as an Arai dark tinted shield.
In other news, the Bell is noisier than my old Bilt helmet- it's called a BELL VORTEX for a reason.
I'm thinking a Shoei GT Air is on my Christmas list.

Most helmets seem to come in a bag, I like the idea of putting my shield in the bag and take it in my backpack.

Just put a strip or two of electrical tape on the top portion of your visor to keep the sun out of your eyes.

Or painter's tape, or a very dark windshield tint film. Easy and works.

I hate riding with a tinted visor or sunglasses. On a twisty road with alternating light and shadow you can't see the shadowed parts too well -- very dangerous.

This time of year I run a clear visor and put on sunglasses when necessary. Being out at night with a tinted visor is dangerous.

:thumbup

I love my Shoei Neotech with the internal flip down sun visor.
I can't imagine using it at night. I flip it up in the Caldicott Tunnel.

I got pulled over wearing a dark shield and was told it was illegal to run at night.

Hmm, I have a helmet with a yellow shield. Is that "dark"?

yellow is great for night riding/driving. my eyes are hyper sensitive to light, and yellow cuts the glare of bright light at night without diminishing visibility. i don't have a yellow shield (need to think about getting one), but i do wear yellow sunglasses when driving at night and it helps a lot. similarly, red lenses are great for cloudy, rainy or foggy days (cuts glare and and increases contrast and visibility). think of it like a camera filter (and what that maximizes in a photograph). with regard to OP's question - dark shields in low light - legal or not, super bad idea.

I love the flip internal visor on my Schuberth C2.

Had a Nolan with an external flip, but didn't like the fact that I couldn't open the shield up on a hot day in slow traffic and still have the tinted one in place.

I also have a new helmet with a photochromic shield that doesn't get as dark, but I find that my eyes aren't strained at all, even in very bright summer sun.

I would never ever ride with a tinted shield at night, but then I'm an old fart.

I've got a Shoei RF-1200, and I got one of those Transitions visors. It goes dark when it interacts with UV light. And when UV light is gone, it goes clear. They're great, but I don't find that they go dark enough in the day.

(Am thinking of selling if anyone is interested.)

Otherwise, I'm with some of the other folks around here. Keep two visors or just run with the clear ones for this time of year. Riding at night with tinted might be fine on the highway, but you gotta leave the highway sooner or later, and people wearing dark clothes is enough for me to say nay.

Not sure if anyone posted this, but I wear one of these when I know I'll be riding in the dark (and every day, now that it's dark at 5:30pm :nchantr)

It curves nicely around your waist and weighs nothing. Oh, and it's like $15 iirc.

I wear the darkest tint visor Shoei has, and often ride at night..... Not really that bad unless you are caught on a part of the highway with noone around you to light up the surroundings.

I do have a yellow visor that I will carry if i know i will be riding in night constantly for a period of time.. such as a 3 week winter class at night... otherwise can't be bothered to change it

I got caught out in Vasco Road which has no external lighting at all, kind of scary. Without cars, the moon, or street lights it's nearly pitch black.

Hey, if you can't see it, it ain't there, right?
Dark tint at night, seriously?
