2003 Gixxer 1000. I made the mistake of letting my sister with her Hands of Death start the bike. It had been running a moment before, and I shut it off so she could try starting it. She pulled the clutch in, and then pressed the start button, but just sort of "tapped" it... enough to start turning over, but not enough to start. She let her thumb off, and everything went dead. No lights, no nothing. Dead.
I've pulled the negative battery cable, waited, put it back on (suggested by someone that it might "reset"). I've checked the 15amp ignition fuse, it's fine. Checked the 30amp main fuse, it's fine.
I don't know what else to check. I'm absolutely lousy at anything electronic.
Battery was replaced just about a year and a half ago. I haven't had ANY problems with it starting, ever.
Somebody please help, because my Mom's gonna feel really bad when I kill my sister. :|

Once I dropped my bike and when I picked it up: no starter. Totally weird. I got it to work again by putting it in 6th and rolling it a few feet.

But no electric at all? fuse, fusible link, ground, maybe relay...

Oh, while you're not working on it leave the battery disconnected.

When I was chasing electrical problems on my VTR I learned that pulling the Positive cable will sometimes "unstick" the starter relay (because I managed to get mine "stuck"), I was told that if you may hear a faint "click" from the relay when you pull the cable, but I didn't hear anything but me cussing at the time. I don't see how this would affect the entire electrical system, but it's one more thing to cross off the list before committing sororicide.

i was wondering similar things. My starter relay can stick, esp. when jumping. If hers somehow stuck with the bendix out it could be sending most of the juice through the starter without spinning it... but there should still be enough left for the lights...

My thoughts as well. To me it sounds like a blown fuse, from the sudden complete failure and considering that it happened when the starter was triggered. I don't know enough about bikes to be any more help though.
Connie, maybe you can download a shop manual, if you don't have one already. That's where I started with my bike, and just crossed things off the list as I checked them. I'm sure there's some sort of an electrical troubleshooting guide in the book, and I downloaded my book from the list that elskipador put together in the sticky "how to tips..."

I had a battery go bad from over charging due to a bad ground wire from the reg/rect. Honda CBR's are notorious for charging problems. I had just left for a ride and at the local gas station I hit the starter and then everything just went blank. Mach 1 ended up fixing it for me. Battery was bad when load tested.

kill switch ?

Will be trying that when I get home tomorrow.

So absolutely nothing is coming on?

Nothing. Dead. Nada. Zip. Zed. Zero. :cry Not even the faintest twinkle in it's beautiful headlight... :(

I'm going to try to test the battery tomorrow, as well. The battery is only about a year and a half old... :dunno

I am betting on a failed battery cable or fusible link. follow the heavy battery cables from each battery terminal and look for bad connection on the battery or at opposite ends and also look for sharp bends or discolored or otherwise misshapen spot where the wire could be broken inside the insulation.

It is not rocket science! :)

It has to be a connection somewhere in the power path from the battery. Check main connects and grounds. It could be a fuse or fusable link (if there is one in the battery line).

Don't overlook the obvious: could be the ignition switch. Mine went flaky and would go stone dead for no reason and then run fine.

Use a voltmeter and "walk" it back. Ground the black lead and use the red to trace out 12V. Start at the + battery post, then the end of the main red batt cable, and keep going. When the 12V goes away, the break is between the last place you looked and the place you are.

I have a battery for your bike if you end up needing one.

You're so awesome, Ed!! :love

Did that. Wires are all as they should be, no corrosion on the terminals, cables nice and tight.

I'll try this tomorrow. Thanks for the advice! :thumbup

You're obviously not getting power.
I suggest trying to replace the 30amp main fuse just to see if that helps.

Obviously your problem lies with a complete lack of power. If your battery has any juice at all, double check this with a multimeter, you need to start pulling it apart to look for wires that may have come undone or burned through.

Start by checking the ignition wires. If the bike isn't even sensing that it is on, that could obviously be a problem. Check the wires that go to the ECU, and make sure those have not burned out.

If you are able to find the "always on" wire, or the hot wire, which goes to the ignition, test to see if it is getting 12 volts. A hint, the hot wire is much thicker than any of the other ignition wires.

Luckily you seem to have another gsxr to ride according to your profile! :rofl
Fuse sounds more like cake since nothing comes on.
Assuming your battery can hold the standard charge, and jumping it doesn't give it the boost you need, maybe your sister and one of the fuses just didn't get along :(
