Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

So I got the Nikon over the Canon 5D because I've read that the Nikon is a bit better in the dark and focusing with fast moving stuff. No idea if that's really true, but I bought into it.

So might as well test it out!

Due to the heat this time of year, the Oregon Kart club runs it's three summer events at night. Very fun to watch. :teeth

its usually agreed on that the higher end nikons focus better in the dark and have better iso quality. the little experience i have with the 5d sort of leans toward that argument.

Agreed on the Nikon's dark focusing abilities.

Picture thread in progress. Only took one lens with me, the rented 10-24. Fortunately, Nikon made it to take 77mm filters, which means I get to use my good CPL :banana

At 10mm, it definitely shaded the upper corners, but most of my mountain pictures get cropped to a more pano format anyway.

Just wanted to share: to celebrate my unemployment, my Canon 70-200 2.8L IS Mk.II arrives Friday. :twofinger

Dave, keep spending! We need the economy to pick up :rofl

Nick, that IS good news. Coulda been way, way worse.

I want to keep Alex's 17-40. But I think I may have to just go get one. So torn.

But I'd also like to have 2.8 instead of F4, so that means the Canon 20mm. But I know that sooner or later I'm getting the 24-70.

So maybe I should just get the 16-35 F2.8. But that's super-spendy.

I need to win the lottery.

On another note, what's with all the models who will do trade for non-nude work, but want to be paid to take their clothes off?

Time is money surely applies either all the time, or non of the time?

Just seems akin to prostitution to me, which I don't personally object to, but really, you're either comfy naked, or not, being paid shouldn't make any difference.

Bloody GWC's screwing up the modelling market :mad

What's even worse is being propositioned by 'up and coming' models who want me to pay them for the privelidge of doing a shoot to submit to a magazine, for which THEY would be paid (!). I mean, seriously WTF?

Just in a grumbly mood - had 3 models want money for a CHARITY book I'm working on. Oh, but they're fine posing with clothes on for free. :|

Hardware perhaps... but the software between the ears has quite a ways to go.:p

Of course, after going to Laguna Seca this last weekend, I've been telling people, "I don't have camera envy anymore, but I do still have lens envy".

I'm with Joebar... Where's that winning lotto ticket!?!

So, how is it? Is it every bit as awesome as I hear? Or, are you a girly man who is gonna complain that it's too heavy? :teeth

if it's like the nikon one they're not so bad.. once you get used to it.

I personally love the weight of the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS, but I'm a big guy. The MKII is supposed to be a huge leap even compared to the already awesome first gen model.

I love love love it. Its not too heavy at all. I only used the mark 1 a few times, but the mark 2 is incredibly fast, sharp, and has great contrast. Well worth the cost of another dirtbike for the extra range i have now, especially given that i shoot a lot of candids

^^^congrats on the pimp daddy lens. I'm just bummed that the prices for the mark I version hasn't come down at all even on the used market.

Yeah, the lack of price drop was what made me go for the mk2. I'm guessing someone on the business side of canon planned on my logic...

When uploading large batches of photos, do you use quick fix software?

Yes.

For Facebook, I use Lightroom to do a resize and some filtering. Even for normal galleries, I use it to size to a specific size.

I have to admit I rarely use it for batch fixing, simply because most of the time I'm shooting in manual, so don't have issues with a batch being entirely under/over shot.

I also like to use RAW in case I want to bring up detail in shadows with as little noise as possible, and working in 14-bits gives me a LOT more 'headroom' to do that. Lightroom will work with RAW, but it's a major resource killer opening batches of RAW files.

Where to buy lenses? San Jose Camera is actually pretty good for Canon lens prices. Not as cheap as BHPhoto, but it's a bricks-n-mortar place, so returns are easier if something goes wrong.

Not to be an ass, but, is there any point in selling the XSi? You'll only get what will cover maybe 1 decent lens for the 5D, and it's always handy during shoots to have a spare body...

What lenses are you planning on getting for the 5D?

Oh, I think just use some 266x Kingston 16GB card, think it was $35 at Fry's. Should probably pick up another, but I don't use it to shoot much video (yet). Tho with the upgrade to the firmware and manual aperture control during filming, that's changing...

EDIT - 133x, more than fast enough, even at full res movie, and poop, they've gone up in price:

I ended up getting one 8GB SanDisk 60MB/s UDMA card from amazon.

I'm still searching for lenses.

I only have one lense for the 5D; 50mm 1.8.

I'd like to get a short and long range lense for the 5D. I'm still trying to decide on which to get. I want to at least have one standard zoom and one telephoto zoom.

I may end up selling the EF-S lenses I have for the xsi so that I can use the new lenses with both bodies.

the 85mm 1.8 looks like another nice lense to have.

Oh, I'm keeping the xsi for backup.

Cool beans :thumbup

The 85mm 1.8 is DELICIOUS.

You can always get the cheapie 70-300 zoom - I think it's something crazy like $150 new. It's good enough for screen resolution and then some, just not a delightful as the 300mm F2.8L or F4L, but it costs 1/10th as much. Good to 'keep you moving'.

And the Kenko 2x adaptor is $100, and again, good enough for everyday, just wouldn't be good enough for print. Well, that's arguable.

My walkaround is now my cheap 28-105, the 85, and the cheap 70-300. For special occasions I take my friends 300 F4.0L

One of these days I'll be looking for a fast and wide Nikon lens, anyone considering selling something in a few months? Like faster than 2.8 and wider than 35 mm...
