Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

Since the bid/ask spread on Craigslist can be wacky, I wanted to ask you guys:

What can I reasonably expect to sell an 18-105mm kit lens for?

I wanted to buy a used D90 but I work about a 15 minute walk from B&H :twofinger and they have an awesome deal -- $919.00 for the D90 kit!

Thinking of buying it and hucking the lens on CL. If my math is right, I'd be paying about $50-100 over the current used prices for the D90 body -- which, for being brand new with a warranty seems irresistible.

/trying to game the system to save a buck

The 18-105 is like $350 new. As brand new could post up at 300. Not sure how well it would sell, being a kit lens. Most people already have a kit lens or better, probably not a big market for it

How much for d90 body alone?

Yeah, I don't want to get stuck with it. That's the rub.

B&H has bodies priced at $799, but... They're "out of stock". (Not selling anymore?)

Pretty certain I can get a D90 used (6 months to 2 years old) for $600-650. There are about 6-7 for sale in my area but everyone is pretty firm at that price range.

They prob don't make d90 anymore with d7000 out.

If camera in decent shape, 600 isn't bad. Was $1000 new 2 years ago

I'm just curious to see if the 24-70 has the same barrel distortion wide open - if it does, make me wonder why I'd get that lens at all, as half the point is to have a nice studio lens, the other is to have a great walkabout lens that will do fairly wide shots, and still some zoom at the other end. I can see why you like the 24-105 for the same reason I like my 28-105 - it's VERY flexible and can be used for 90% of the time.

Ian... I got rid of the 24-105 and replaced it with a 24-70... I like it a lot! :teeth

Well, well, well, ladies and germs: I've made the radical jump to mid-2008 and purchased a Nikon D90!

I love it. It's a HUGE upgrade from the D70, as I had expected. A few things really stand out for me:

- The huge, bright, sharp LCD
- Crazy ISO performance. I have no problem shooting 1600-3200 in particular is amazing. Anything much over 800 would produce awful banding on the D70. It's nice to have the Hi 1.0 (i.e., ISO 6400) as an option.
- Improved tones and dynamic range

I got it with the 18-105 kit lens, additional battery and a Hoya filter for $700 on CL. Initially I was going to sell the kit lens but I may be holding on to it for a little bit longer. I've never had a VR lens so I find the additional 2 stops pretty cool!

Oh, while I'm at it: FLASH QUESTION!

I pulled my trusty SB-600 flash out of my camera bag to test it with the new camera last week. The batteries in it went dead, not surprising since I last used it 7 months ago. What is suprising: I put new batteries in, but it wouldn't turn on. I get frustrated and come back a few hours later and magically, it turns on and functions fine. I put it back in my bag (can't remember if I left it on standby or not) and yesterday (a week later) I couldn't get it to turn on.

I put in some new batteries and I'm it's the same issue. It won't turn on.

WTF. :wtf

HALP PLZ.

Okay, time to stop being a photographic lummox and start getting active again. But first a question: anyone in here (or does anyone know anyone) who's selling a first-get 580EX? I'm in the market.

after finishing my 365 photo project on new years i havent touched my camera since, sad... i needa go shoot some more.

what kind of lens would you guys recommend for shooting sports? i always try to get decent seats for any sport...within the first 10 rows. im going to supercross on saturday and want to try and get a few good shots in...using a nikon d3000

Supercrosses are pretty dark, so you'll want something fast. For a one-off thing like that, I'd look into renting gear. Maybe see if you can get your hands on a 70-200mm f/2.8, or something similar.

I'd go with a prime like the Nikon 400mm f/2.8.

Yikes, that's a helluva zoom for a crop-sensor body!

I've been to SuperCross, you get pretty damn close.

Something like a 70-300 zoom would be more flexible - something where you can catch them overhead, and then enough to get them on other parts of the track.

Of course, if you're nowhere near the front row - the 400 would be good.

I used a 300 at the Harlem Globetrotters and was about row 26, and it was still a bit much...

I just bought a Tamron 18-200mm lens. So far I am please with the lens, much better than what came with my camera.
